If you're going to run a forum, you have to do it right. A little extra work to make sure spammers ain't spammin is part of the game... the benefits are amazing. The only way to stop phpbb spam is to manually approve the first posts and create custom q&a on registration page... the questions should not be simple "what color is the sky" shit and the theme of the questions should match the theme of your site to make it easier for actual human registrants.
