From what i read it means you have to pay that first before the insurance contract starts to pay. I found a plan that has a $2850 deductible. If i go to the doctor that charges like $80 a visit i have to pay $2850 before my insurance will pay it? that cant be right. This is the first time i have ever had or needed health insurance i have no idea how it works.
Im looking for health insurance and dont understand what deductible means help me out

Deducatble ussually is the max out of pocket per year, typically you will have co pays for doctor visits. If you get hospitalized or have a serious injury though the first 2850 is out of pocket. -

You should have a copay for doctor visits and prescriptions, and the deductible should only apply to surgical procedures and hospitalizations...Comment
-
Well, as he has mentioned nothing about co-pays, I am going to have to make some presumptions. Maybe he can scan his policy in for us.Comment
-
Every plan ive seen has a copay for a doctor like $5-$20 i think you just pay the deductible for hospital and major services first before they will pay anything is right.Jealousy... is a mental cancer. ~B.C. ForbesComment

Deductibles is the amount you pay out of pocket (usually each year) before your insurance starts paying for care. Copays have nothing to do with this. Copays are what you pay for services rendered when your insurance pays the remainder.
Honestly, unless you have a serious medical issue, you are money ahead without health insurance. I am currently uninsured (except for D&D and short term disability) and it works just fine. I don't want insurance and it always pisses me off to know that the goddamned socialists include me in the statistics they use to fight to spend more and more money providing insurance to people who don't need it.
I budget about $2500 a year on my health needs and that includes a new pair of glasses with good frames every year whether I need them or not, an annual checkup w/ full labs, 1 dental cleaning, figures in six visits to the doctor (I only used two of those last year) and my prescriptions for gout.
Health insurance is by and large a scam. There is a reason why insurance companies have piles and piles of money. Its not because they are so great at investing money. Its because most of the people who have health insurance spend less on care then they spend on premiums. In fact, most people have insurance through their work, their employer pays their premiums for them. If this were not the case, people who work a minimum wage job and get company paid benifiets could make almost double what they make now and buy their own insurance (or none at all - a smarter choice in many situations) or pocket the money.
Many people have deductibles that are higher than what I spend on care in a whole year, so they pay that out of pocket and then they pay the premiums. Now tell me what kind of fool thinks that is a good deal?Last edited by minusonebit; 09-08-2007, 08:59 PM.Comment

So when you have a heart attack and need emergency surgery or some other major illness you think your $2500 will cover that? My father had open heart surgery his health insurance paid %100 of it and it cost over 60k.

Yes, it is a big if... but you're already dedicating $200 a month to your health, why not give the $200 to an insurance company and be covered?Vacares - Web Hosting, Domains, O365, Security & More - Paxum and BTC Accepted

No, thats why you don't have motor vechile accidents that are you fault. Liability insurance is compulsory (in the US, anyway) so when you do have an accident the other guy gets to pay. Except in those fucking no-fault states (goddamn you, Michigan) then it becomes a bit more complicated.Comment

Ask any dealer in Vegas if insurance is a suckers bet or not.
You are betting that you are going to get sick or injured in a manner that won't be covered under some other form of mandatory insurance.Comment

Rarely someone flies off their motorcyle? Dude you seriously are on some drugs. Usually when i see motorcycle accidents the dude or chick is not stuck on the bike. I guess you have a seat belt on yours
And i literally meant fly, like take flight like an airplane your fucking retarded dude

My chances of getting hit by a car are not too good. I don't jay-walk. If anyone hits me, they'll be paying for it, not me. And I have had four car accidents in my life, none of them my fault. Thats not me in denial, thats how it was on the police report and what my MVR shows. The other parties ended up paying in every case. I did have to get an attorney in one of the cases, but in the end her insurance ended up paying for that too.
The most recent one, a rear-end hit by some stupid bitch in Texas who ran into me when I stopped at the bottom of a freeway ramp to yield, is trying to worm out of it. That was a rental car, so that pisses me off alot since I have to deal with three morons out of it: her, people in the "loss control" department of Enterprise and her insurance company's stupid claims adjuster. But she'll pay when its all over with. It was only $600 in PD and ~ $550 in medical bills to make sure my neck was OK. I already paid the doctors and the x-ray lab, and if this goes on much longer I'll pay Enterprise and then I'll take another drive down to the wretched state of Texas and visit her courthouse and file Small Claims against her.
And any insurance you can buy for $200 a month is going to have a huge deductible. So you are really paying the $200 a month for that PLUS the cost of your care up to the deductible. In my case, that would up my cost of health care to $400 a month while providing me nothing that I don't have now, other than a headache dealing with morons at the claims office.Comment

If you don't think insurance is betting against yourself, you are clueless. I am not trying to insult you, just wake you up.
Why do you think loan companies make you get full coverage when you get a car loan? You think it is because they are concerned about your medical bills in case you get into an accident? Not a chance.
Why do you think loan companies make you get fire insurance when you get a home loan? You think it is because they are concerned about your medical bills in case your house burns down? Not a chance.
It is "in case shit happens."Comment

An accident that is caused by me, that lands me in an extended hospital stay? Not too likely. But should that happen, there is this little thing called med-pay.
Ask your agent about it. Probably the best deal they offer.Comment

Really i didn't know it was in case something happens!lol Thats what i've been trying to say to you because you seem to think you don't need insurance its all bullshit.

Face it there are way to many non insured motorists out there even in mandatory states. Then often these fuckers have zero assets, so then what?
You catch some random bug that turns into a staff infection of some sort that is highly resistant to most antibiotics, you aware many of the super drugs run upwards of 60 to 120 bucks per pill?
Hell there is a crap load of ways to get sick or injured where you will get stuck with the bill. I personally wish to hell I could get insurance for myself yet non will cover my pre existing conditions or anything they think is attached to it which means everything.Comment
