Stupid Question About Toplists

I've been looking at toplists and adding sites to toplists lately and have started to wonder how these things work, since it seems (if the toplist stats are to be believed...and if they are not, what a surprise, eh?) that almost everybody on the list gets far more hits from the list than they put in.

I suppose this may be due to some of the traffic being search engine traffic and other nonreciprocal sources. Otherwise, something seems to be amiss.

Anybody got any insight into this? I never really thought about it before.

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

One hit comes in, that one person clicks several outlinks, thus giving each person they sent traffic to a click registered.. Of course this is assuming the toplist has at least a 101% productivity.

Exactly its called productivity. Tgps use the same idea. If surfers click on 3 links when they visit the page then the productivity of the design/site is 300% Some are more productive some are less. Depending on the sophistication of the toplist software they are using however it could be packed full of hitbots - so keep an eye on the productivity (used that word again) of the traffic they send back to you......

There are two causes for what you're talking about.

#1: Traffic that comes in from sources not counted by the toplist (typeins, bookmarks, search engines, etc).
#2: Productivity greater than 100%. If a toplist and the sites it links to are relatively clean, most surfers will click more than one link. Therefore, one surfer you send becomes 2, 3 or more clicks out.

99% of toplists set the ratio to like 1:3 regardless of hits.. you send in 1.. and boom 3 are showing as out

I belive that. The stats at the toplist never agree with the server logs.

Yeah, I was going to say: I never see nearly as many hits coming in (in my server stats) as the toplist says it sent.

It also depends on resets. Maybe the toplist resets every 3 days or something.
