You guys really don't think they do this kinda stuff regularly? Think about it. They already assume Asian bird flu has the very real possibility of becoming a pandemic virus in the wild.
Don't you think researchers are going to do as much testing as they can to see how the virus would likely mutate to become airborne? Think they weren't testing Ebola or small pox.
How else would they try to make an anti-virus treatment.. The only real part of this that makes this news is the govt asked them "not" to publish how they did it. In order to stop someone else from duplicating it.
Typically scientist tell how they did something so others can confirm it. It's kinda how this stuff works asking them not to publish the info is a pretty big thing to the science community.
