I remember being on 4chan when that was going on. He just happened to be the number they drew out of the hat. There are a few people I know that took part in the event, but there were thousands so they didn't get caught.

It's just like being in a group of thousands of people being chased by 8-10 lions, some people are going to get taken down but almost all will get away with it.

The program they used was LOIC (low orbiting ion cannon) for the DDOS. They modified the program to have one person treat everyone running the app like a botnet on steroids.
I guess it's important to feel apart of a group and have a belonging, even if it costs a few of them serious jail time.

Obviously he should get some kind of punishment but facing up to 15 years of prison? you have got to be kidding me. They just sentenced a DC councilman to only 1 year in jail for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. I know the kid won't get anywhere near 15 years but it's still kinda retarded.

I would say that previous cases are not a gauge because the government is "upping the
ante".

What used to be a game is now a serious crime.
But in reality, it was always a serious crime. It was just something the government was
not very concerned with.

But after getting hit a few times on government sites, they have started to see things
in a different light.

My suggestion to people is that if you are mad at someone then go beat their ass the
old way with your hands because using the computer is going to get you fucked up hard.

Thats what happens when private prison contractors and police unions spend millions of dollars lobbying lawmakers for tougher sentencing laws. There's a reason we incarcerate more people than any country on the planet, including China who has 4x the population we have.

That's not really the reason, its an attack on the countries infrastructure, that is how its treated in the court.
We incarcerate too many people in prisons because we are too soft. In china they will reuse the bullet and if the salaries continue to increase they will make people make their own bullets. Its a very efficient way to keep crime rates low.

Yeah a year sounds about right and I assume that's what he'll most likely get and also a hefty fine. Wonder how they decided to go after just this guy? I remember when that was happening and there was like 20 other guys in their IRC channel doing the same thing along with countless other people. I remember them hitting Hustler (I think?) right after, but Nat Net wouldn't budge. Do they go after the one that was doing the most or what?

The possible sentence doesn't mean much. "up to five years" most often ends up bring a year of probation. Still, it's a warning - just because you're on internet doesn't mean there aren't real life repercussions.

DDoS can cost a lot -- recent attempts at VISA got them thinking.

Say someone was able to DDoS Visa Processing or the NYSE that would do some serious economic damage.

The political damage of DDoS against governmental websites or major new media sites?
