For what it's worth, I lived in Japan for over five years, and have continued to travel there since then, always observing the sex scene during my journeys.
Japanese attitudes about sex are indeed quite different than Westerners, both for cultural and religious reasons.
Still, the main reason girls go into the sex trade (like here) is for the easy money - either because they get paid very well, or else to pay off a debt (usually a gambling debt).
As many of you know, the display of pubic hair, etc., is technically illegal in Japan (even though boobies are shown legally on late night broadcast television).
Nonetheless, Japan also has a huge underground (urabon) network, of live sex shows, prostitution, and various print and online publications, mostly controlled by crew cut guys with missing pinky fingers - otherwise known as "Yakuza" (the Japanese mafia). They are definitely not to be messed with.
To be honest, most of the Japanese hardcore girls I have seen are not that attractive and give lackluster performances, as compared to the girls that do censored Japanese porn (and are generally paid more for doing so).
In either case, they are paid ridiculously high amounts of money for their performances. If you want to shoot for cheap, go to Thailand or the Philippines, not Japan.
BTW, often, even the most modest softcore/censored movie girls, do the extensive strip club circuit by the end of their careers.
Anyway, that is the short and skinny story about my take on your question.
