man, looking at those glowing embers makes me want to wrap a steak with a few Gallic cloves and some olive oil in tinfoil, and toss in it there for a few.... any experts here?
any one here ever cook in the fireplace?

I've done it tinfoil-wrapped style in a fire on a campsite (we didn't have a grill cover with us) when I was a kid.
Just wrapped the steak, some herbs, a little butter and some diced potatoes n carrots in foil and tossed them into the campfire for about 20 minutes.Comment

made some Hungarian Goulash over open fire abot 3 weeks ago when I came back from Europe. Lugged the pot and the stand back, tasted real good
not the same pot, I have more of a traditional style

when i was a kid we did this all the time during the winter
we took meat (steak or hamburgers ) and potatos and carrots and onions and shit liek that and wrapped it in foil and put it in ... it was awesome.Comment

Steak in tinfoil might work in a fireplace. The technique is to build an ash bed, load the ash bed with coals, cover the clothes with a layer of ash - half an inch or more - place the foil packet over the center of the coal bed - then cover that with a layer of ash, or, mostly cover it, leaving a vent hole.
A cooking fire is different from a heating/lighting fire.
Growing up we had a franklin stove style fireplace insert with a swinging broiling grill - that was fun. Smoke, spitting flames, etc, but it works and is fun.
We used to make "mountain pies", with a tool like a clamshell mold - two slices of buttered bread with spoonfuls of filling, either meat or fruit. you close the device, pop it over an area of hot coals in the fireplace, and make kid-approved fireplace food all night long.
