    wheat-free diet?

I just read this article this morning. It's about research by a cardiologist who proposes that today's wheat hybrids contain new proteins that our bodies can't deal with, and which are a leading contributor to diabetes, obesity, and other ailments. He proposes trying a wheat-free diet to see if your life improves (and he seems fairly certain it will.)

    http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Doc...519/story.html

Has anyone here tried a wheat-free diet? Any thoughts?

You have great thighs. If you eat wheat, keep it up.

you have to separate the wheat from the chaff

99% likely it's just another alternate health money spin

grains are in general pretty healthy and make up the main section of the food pyramid

I have been gluten free for over a year, but mainly because I am celiac so I am allergic to wheat and gluten.

It made a huge difference in my diet and overall well being.

It seems there is a huge difference in how wheats are produced and processed in the US vs Europe, etc.

1 in 133 Americans is affected by gluten nowadays, but most people don't know it. Check out http://www.celiac.com/

hahah I do eat wheat, but not a lot. I'm going to attribute my thighs to my home cooking in general

            Thanks for the link, jmk!

Exactly. Unless you suffer some specific health ailment or food allergy involving wheat I'd say this doc is a quack looking to make a quick buck.

The amount of info out there from credible medical sources that state the benifits of wheat/bran/whole grains is insurmountable compared to the few (or the one) that says the opposite.

Personally, 5-6 mornings a week wouldn't be the same without grains: shredded wheat, bran flakes, oatmeal, 100% whole wheat or rye toast, etc. Keeps me regular it does. :D

I think the over consumption of wheat and wheat based products can definitely lead to obesity, but that is nothing compared to the sugars we eat though. The sugar that goes into the foods in the US has gotten out of control.

As stated above, some people, like my wife, have a gluten sensitivity called celiac disease. For everyone else, gluten free / wheat free is this year's silly fad diet. Anything but "eat a balanced diet and exercise", you know. It sells to all of those people who bought into "no carbs" last year, but didn't have the self discipline to do it. Now we have the watered down version "ok, you can have any carbs except wheat".

Wheat has for centuries been one of mankinds primary sources of protein, the fourth most important or so. For health, the answer is still the same - a balanced diet and exercise. Fries for breakfast STILL isn't healthy because you didn't have toast with it.

One of my best friends has this gluten/wheat allergy.

It sucks for him to go to restaurants cause it seems almost everything has gluten.

Definitely not a fun allergy to have for sure.

Yeah I've seen Forks Over Knives, pretty good, it's on Netflix. There's a book too.

I think some meat is ok, but as with everything in moderation. Obviously if you are eating large amounts of red meat, or any meat every day, something is bound to go wrong in your body.

I think the US food pyramid or MYPyramid needs re-evaluated, it's bs. Everyone has different needs and everyone is unique.

Good point. First things first. Assuming there is some small effect from too much wheat, it's pretty certain that exercise and stress make much more difference, so take care of the big things first. Probably the most healthy thing about gluten free crackers would be if if you jog from the car to the store to get them. Park a block away from the store and walk, then check labels for gluten if you feel the need.

Trying to avoid anything wheat, in fact anything processed and eat everything as raw as possible.

If combined with enough exercise and rest one feels much much better energywise, plus if you really get down to work out you can get very noticable results in no time.
