Yeah that's true, you can buy your way into the music biz... but 99% of the time you will lose it if you don't know what to do with it, who to hire and what to watch out for.

Most guys that buy into the biz have one or two large failures before they learn the game and come out on top. Usually they lose around $200-$500k before they figure out they should cut their losses and try again. Unfortunately it takes no less than a year to figure out it isn't working. But a lot of times it can be up to three years. There's lots of reasons for that but that's damn near a 20 page report worth of info I'm not typing here.

That is what normally happens. They can avoid this but they would have to know how to find the right people to hire...

...and to know that you'd have to know who to ask for cross reference info on your prospects...

...but that person would also have to know what they are talking about but how do you know if he/she does...

...you don't unless you have been directly in the fields for a long time.

Sure you can get lucky and find a hot band that has what it takes, but it's up to you to break the band and that's where it gets tricky because the music business is a very closed tight knit circle. Your execs are the key.

So, money doesn't buy you much except the chance to lose it in a long & heartbreaking fashion unless you are lucky and know what to look for.

Yes, it's a new way and it's a very warm and fuzzy way but it's just not the most efficient way for anyone.

Can someone break off of it? Yes. Has anyone? No.


On the flip side, I will say that most big bands on the radio were bands that at one time no one believed in. So I would never say that all the bands on Sellaband sucks.

Also, they have a nice team of folks working for them... some of them I know personally... because of that I also know that they would never give a band from Sellaband their best material unless they were signing them to their production company/label. So the CD that bands record won't usually be A-Level material.

For a band, that's not really a big deal. You can use Sellaband with no strings attached unless you raise 50k. Then you are in a relatively fair contract with them to do as they please with you for a year. In that year they will try to negotiate a deal with a major label with you as their artist. That's not really a huge deal as the terms will most likely suck but you will make all your money from shows anyway. In short, most likely nothing will come from dealing with Sellaband but it doesn't hurt to try.

For an investor it's worthless. You don't learn anything. You don't get a real inside look at the process. You call no shots. Nothing. And you make no money.

The best thing to do is to look at the artists and if you find one you like try to contact them and secure management AND possibly a label deal with them to your company. Management is more important now a days. Labels are getting the short end of the stick.

I'm getting off topic. In short, Sellaband is a cool idea but it's nothing to invest a ton of time in.

Oh, also let me add that Sellaband is a better deal for European artists as the owners and most of their staff are more familiar with the industry outside of North America. That means that once you raise the $50k to get started you have a better shot at doing something with it.

P1mpdog's thread in 6 months will be titled, "I used to have money, but invested in the music business."

All of my experience with the music business is from the journalistic side and I can tell you a few things. Most bands don't make money. There are a very very VERY small group that do, but most of them are starving for a reason. Musicians as a whole are among the flakiest people you will ever meet. I have known bands that kick around for years playing shitty clubs then get a records deal only to break up. Or they make a record then break up. Or it turns out the record that the label spent a bunch of money on sucks and nobody buys it. It is very hard to find a band/musician that is focused, talented, driven and responsible and still there is no guarantee. There are some very professional, talented and driven people that play music and don't make enough money to live on doing it.

If you have a ton of money you can do it the way some people have where they start up a label and hire experienced management people then sign a distribution deal with a major label and start signing well known established acts. But that is going to take a ton of money and you could easily invest millions before you see anything in return.

If you are looking to start small here is what you do:

1. Go to a big book store and buy ever independent music magazine they have. Then go over and start buying books on music publicity and marketing. Read them all and get an idea how distribution, contracts, marketing and the entire record making/selling process works. Read two books about rock: Book 1 called "so you want to be a rock & roll star." by Jacob Slichter. It is written about a band called Semisonic and how they rose to fame with one hit song and everything that went into it. Read closely the part where he talks about how, since they were unknown, it cost the label about 500K just to get their first song on the radio. Then read Book #2 called, "Get in the Van." by Henry Rollins. It is about his years touring with Black Flagg. Pay close attention to the parts where he talks about playing sold out shows every night and being one of the most loved punk bands of it's era and still being so broke he was living in a tool shed.

2. Go to any independent music stores in your city and ask them what distributors they use and how they get their product.

3. Hit the clubs and start looking for bands. Once you find a band you like that you think people would enjoy. Offer them a deal to record a record. Nothing fancy, maybe even an EP. Follow them closely through the recording process.

4. Duplicate the CD once it is all done and work to get it into your local stores and played on your local radio stations. Send out copies to magazines to get reviews written about it. Use these CD's to get the band booked at more shows and sell them there.

5. Use the Internet, myspace and all of these things to get as much exposure for you band as possible. Shoot a cheap video and get it on their site. Send copies of it to anywhere that plays music videos.

6. Work on wider distribution deals and try to book them on a more nationwide tour. The more exposure the better.

7. If you are not exhausted yet and still are having fun, maybe the business is for you.
