Following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, the U.S. Congress passed the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, also known as the USA PATRIOT Act (the Patriot Act). Canada also enacted a legislative response to the events of 11 September 2001: the Anti-terrorism Act. Both statutes were speedily enacted, intended to address the threat posed by the attacks and designed to give government agencies additional tools and powers to prevent and combat terrorism.
