thinking about it... thinking about 3-4 years old, large with short hair... been over to the dog jail checking them out...anything I should look for or look out for? don't know a heck of a lot about dogs...
you guys ever pick up a used dog?

Would be really nice of you to adopt a dog in that situation. I'm sure you would find an unconditional love like no other.
Just make friends with one of them and bring him home. -
"used dog"??
I think they would rather be referred to as "pre-owned" or "like-new"

need to make sure the dog isn't going to go ballistic over all the fucking around here, and that the dog won't chew all my stuff up if I need to split for 1/2 a day... not really sure I want a big ass dog in the caddy... not really looking for unconditional love either to be honest... I'm not lonely... just thought it might be cool to have a roommate that would bark if zombies came by etc..Comment

Hahaha used! You can sometimes ask the shelters if you can take them home for a "trial" run. I know the dogs in jail would appreciate getting a real home!!

Take one out for a couple of hours, hang out somewhere grassy, talk to him/her, share a sandwich, pour him a bowl of water, see what happens. The dog should know what's up.
Don't be afraid to say no and keep looking. Yea the dog might get put down but so will the perfect one you haven't' met yet.

Although I feel bad for the dogs there all locked up, do you really want some dog that's already grown? How do you know you won't make the wrong noise one day that triggers some "owner used to beat me" thing in him and he attacks you?
Lol, really though, I'd rather get a puppy. Puppies are more fun than dogs.Last edited by Jakez; 11-07-2011, 06:06 PM.Comment

I've had a couple of pound puppies. Be sites to research the breed(s) to learn about temperment and such and get that's a good match for you. An older dog typically won't tear stuff up like a puppy would, but you may well have some of that. For historical display only. This information is not current:

this is really good advice. as fucked up as it is, you can kinda test drive till you find one you like. i picked up mine from a rescue organization, but he was only 6 weeks old. been by my side ever since. but even though he was only 6 weeks, i think he had some rough times and hasn't let go of them, i can only imagine what a 2-3 year old might haveTake one out for a couple of hours, hang out somewhere grassy, talk to him/her, share a sandwich, pour him a bowl of water, see what happens. get one! even though you say you don't need unconditional love you will appreciate your dog's loyalty and love. known many guys who said the same as you and became huge dog lovers.
with a dog that's already got a 'history' there can be issues - he/she could have had some bad times and just like people animals can be majorly fucked up by how they were treated when they were young. sometimes at shelters they know a lot about a dog, other times they only know what they've observed about the dog since he's been at the shelter.
if you're staying out in that big home in the country i'd definitely look for a 4 legged roommate or two

We had several different dogs when I was a kid and all but one of them were older rescue dogs that we got from the pound.
Like others say the great part of it is that most of them are already housebroken and you know what you are getting so you don't do like a friend of mine and get a puppy that you think is going to grow up to be about a 30-40 pound dog and end up with a 110 pounds beast
I would highly encourage you to do it. Just make sure to ask if the dog has had any shots and if they know about any medical issues the dog has. Otherwise, just spend a little time with the dog, take it out in the parking lot by the building and walk with it, try to see what kind of personality it has and what its energy level is and if you can work with that.
Also ask about the situation the dog came from. If it was badly abused and you have kids it might not be a good dog to have around because it might spook easy and nip. You will find a lot of those dogs are simply dogs that people no longer can care for so they dump them at the pound.Comment

are you ready to take the dog for walks everyday and pick up after it in public? Cost of vet? the dog becomes part of your daily routine.
you gonna get a big dog when you not sure you want unconditional love? How about the dog begging you to play all day everyday? What you gonna do? Or how about because you arent walking and running him he starts chewing and destroying (inevitable)
This is why pets as gifts are terrible idea, having a pet is a new life, a form of parental responsibility not just like buying something to sit on shelf. And this is the very reason the shelters are full now!
The dog will be back at shelter in less than two weeks I bet. Dogs are big responsibility and theres nothing worst than people who buy dogs and then lock them in kennels in their apt/house.

Wow, you really don't like dogs, do you?
I have 3 dogs, and they make me very happy. Yes, I have to pick up after them, and I have to pay for the vet bills and such, but they are very sweet and love me and my family to death.
Best decision I ever made: getting a dog!Comment

Actually, you are quite wrong.
I am a lifelong dog owner and tired of seeing them put to sleep because people buy them without thinking about responsibility. The shelters are full because of threads like this....
Dont try to label me obviously you have no idea or clue what i was even talking abouit.
Responible pet owners will understand my post.

have you ever had a puppy? They are usually a nightmare.. you have to be on them CONSTANTLY at first. You can train them to go to the bathroom outside and use the bell within a few hours sure, but you also have to remember they have to go like ever 45 minutes so if you had dinner plans you might as well order in!Although I feel bad for the dogs there all locked up, do you really want some dog that's already grown? How do you know you won't make the wrong noise one day that triggers some "owner used to beat me" thing in him and he attacks you?

Obviously crates help but if they piss and shit in there how will that make you feel after cleaning that out?
Say no to puppies unless you are full out committed to having one, because they are not just fun, they are a serious handful!
We just picked up a curly coated retriever recently. About as easy as a puppy transition can go, but it still changed our lives up a whole lot for the last 5 months...webmaster at pimproll dot comComment

that's not true at all.. if its not trained properly it will chew until its teeth fall out. Most people wont keep a dog in their house if they can't do that so that's why you probably haven't seen any older dogs do it..webmaster at pimproll dot comComment

ya know, you were asking for advice, I asked legitimate questions regarding responsibility to which you ignored and now personal attacks LOL

Incorrect. I do not use personal attacks on GFY, I use wit and structured sentences to evoke response. Theres no need to call anyone asshole it shows low level of intelligence, I prefer discussions.
Honestly, seems you should get a dog. If youre ready, youll be able to manage it, if not, youll get rid of the dog.
Asking you if youre ready is not calling you anything.
As a dog owner soemtimes i see people get animals they are not ready for, especially big dogs. As member of ASPCA sometimes I cant hold my tongue when it comes to animals neglect because owner dont have time for them but I didnt call you anything. Just showing concern for the animals.Last edited by Fletch XXX; 11-08-2011, 04:31 AM.

yes I am carefully considering the situation, one aspect being don't want a big ass dog in my car. had a big ass dog once before... the dog lived at my house and didn't really go places with me... couple of trips when I was driving a truck but mostly hung around the pad all day.
this dog will be with my when i'm shooting content. one issue is tripping over rover when I'm moving lights and shit around, another is all the fucking... might drive the dog crazy? can't have a dog barking or walking around in the videos... need to be very clear about what i'm doing with this one..Comment
