    simple 2 light shot

    I see lots of you guys struggling with lighting and one thing I notice is the thought that you need 5-8 lights to get something interesting. it's like they say about dicks.... it's not what you're using, it's how you're using it

    this is 2 umbrellas, one camera right and one upstage camera left. the only issue with shooting like this is you really have to control the model/models... because there is no 'slack' here, like shooting with 'butterfly' lighting, which is the most common and which I seldom use.

    in most cases I use 1 strobe with an umbrella for 80% of my stuff...

                                                  I don't shoot my setups... here's how it works: 1 light, the KEY is a bit less than 45 deg camera left, head high.. pointed a bit down into the set... the other light, the BACK CROSS is directly 180 deg from that. the thing is I have a sunken living room allowing this set up....

                                                      then standing DIRECTLY in front of the set, take 2-4 steps camera left, set you models so she/his has her face lit than try a few shots to figure out where you need be and where the model needs to be.... when you are ready for ECU's step outside the KEY camera right and shoot DOWN so you don't SEE the light upstage camera left... pain in the ass but if ya get bored it's pretty much fun
