It's going to miss Cancun and Playa Del Carmen... those are the biggest tourist areas. I just confirmed reservations at a resort in Akumal last week, looks like it's going to get creamed. Hopefully it doesn't fuck up the resort or beaches too much, I won't be there till Dec.Comment

They already have all their shit boared up, signs taken down, you name it. They learned from the last one that hit. They are gunna minimize damages and of course they will have it fixed in under a few months, minus the poor areas of course. Hell its just materials plus very cheap labor.

I'm sure the resorts will be fixed by then, the entire economy in that region depends on tourism so they're pretty quick to rebuild. The reefs and natural areas can get pretty messed up though, I was in Cozumel recently and the reefs close to shore were in still in pretty rough shape from the last one that went through there. Could see huge chunks of cement and other debris from resorts while snorkeling around off the beaches.Comment

Let's hope it doesn't do too much damage or kill too many people. I'm sure the building codes are no where near as good as they are here in the US and look how bad we got it with Andrew and Katrina. Add to that they likely can't just jump in a car and leave in a lot of cases.

Water/mudslides could be the most potentially dangerous problem. Two years ago around 1400 people in Guatemala were buried under 40 ft of mud in one village alone - all from water from Hurricane Stan.
Another clue of the water power - Was viewing a home in the Carribbean. There had been a hurricane a month earlier and they were redecorating. This home was on the top of a mountain - about 800 ft above sea level and a mile in from the coast.
The windows had been blown out and sea water spread across the ceilings at a 45 degree angle - this had been swept up from the coast and thrown into this home 800 ft up. Awesome power.Comment

Dean "supposed" to reduce strength to a Cat 2 when it starts inwards, but you are prob right - when it hits the Sierra Madre range there may be a lot of water and potential mudslides.
As usual, it's probably people living a simple lifestyle in modest homes who will carry the main cost of destruction.Comment
