The Kindle Fire has pretty much identical specs as the year old Nook Color. I've got a Nook that we've turned into a full on Android tablet. It runs all the latest 3D games and has no issue playing 720p videos either.
I believe that B&N will be announcing a Nook Color 2 in the next week or so.
I'd at least hold off and see what they announce.
