I'll be using it for all of your basics... laptop, desktop, etc... but also would like to stream to my TV-based devices. What's a good router for this? I would like TV stream quality to be very good.

go to the store and buy the most exspensive router in the name brand you like. I went and bought a netgear last night from walmrt for $149. and it is working great.... one of the $40. ones might work just as good... who knows. -
I have never spent much on a router and have never been disappointed. I went to Target and bought one that has every frequency known to man or whatever and spent $50. I think its capable of 250 MBPS or something... way more than I will ever need.

If you don't need wireless, I bought the D-Link DGS-1008G 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch and is great. I have this split into a wireless router that is ONLY used for wireless so there is no choking or issues when it comes to downloading/streaming, etc.
I used to have a 5 port Netgear but it sucked ass when it came to having multiple things going on, plus I needed extra ports and this seems to hold up fine with running 100ft+ cables from each port all over my house.Email: Clicky on MeComment

For SOHO use, any cheap Linksys is good. It's the same company that makes the $10,000 Cisco datacenter routers, just without some features that you wouldn't use.
For a somewhat larger office with a serious geek on staff, Cisco branding means it's too good to sell as a Linksys.
I've bought switches, not even routers, that cost $xx,xxx. I've built routers from scratch. Our office runs on a cheap Linksys because it's well matched to the task. Ps - for streaming to the TV, "old fashioned" CAT5 beats the shit out of the hottest new wireless. I just ran several new CAT6 cables to wall jacks here because wire is so much better. I tried both an e4200 and wndr3700v2 when it was time time to upgrade from the the wrt54g with tomato firmware I've used for many years. Had problems with both with link speed and connections consistently dropping (mostly during file transfers). I ended up with an Asus rt-n56u router which has worked great since I got it about a month ago. Not sure if the first two came from bad batches or what, but they performed well below my expectations. I use an Asus usb-n13 adaptor on my laptop that's used mostly as an htpc and it pairs great with the router. There's no guest network option which would be nice, but not a big deal for me. It also has 2 USB ports so I use one for shares on an external hard drive and the other as a print server. Plus, it's a bit cheaper and quite perty :p
Buy a few different models and see which one works the best for you and just return the others.

BigBen, are you still using that wrt54g tomato for anything? Which version is it? I always wanted to play with that but never found one with enough memory to do anything with it. I used to have routers die on me every few months, it was crazy, linskys, d-link, and a few more.... then I got the Asus n15, the best I ever used.... I am a big fan of asus.

Do not just go by the brand go by the brand and exact model. Personally I am partial to a good wireless-N router which can take third party firmware such as dd-wrt or tomato. Just because something is $175 doesn't mean it's really better than the other one by a different company for $60. It all depends.
