I remember being a kid in rural NJ. We had TV. Not cable, regular TV. We had four or five channels, mostly ABC, NBC, CNS, PSB, and something else. But it was free. When I first moved to California in 1989, I was stunned that I had to pay for TV. Years later I'm paying $80 a month so we can watch the same four or five channels. (Different channels than what I watched as a kid, but the truth is we always watch the same channels.)
The Internet was more of the same. It was a way for the people to broadcast their message. We didn't need to have a radio station or a TV studio, all we needed was to design a web page and have something to say. I remember being stunned watching a counter telling me how many people visited my webpage. Who knew that so many people were interested in what I had to say?
The cat is out of the bag and it's not going back in.
