For the Beckham doubters - Beckham bends it, Galaxy wins
Heralded midfielder marks his first appearance in the starting lineup with a curling free kick for the winning goal, as the Galaxy reaches the Superliga final.
I'm not sure why so many self-proclaimed "knowledgeable soccer fans" can't find it in their brains to admit the guy has exceptional talent. He obviously does and has shown it repeatedly over the years. I keep hearing words like overrated and over the hill attributed to him, yet it looks to me like he sitll has some very productive years ahead of him.
During the last world cup you could hear it in the announcer's voice every time Beckam fired a cross or set up some play, excitement surrounds the guy. Give him an inch of room and he'll almost always create a scoring situation.
He's like the Gretzky of soccer. Lord knows a lot of idiots tried to downplay HIS talent too.

Lots of people disliked Michael Jordan too, doesn't mean he wasn't a great player.

he's good but nowhere near the best in todays game, there are loads more people that deserve his pay more than him.
Apparently you have no concept of how many shirts he will sell. Ask Manchester United about their shirt sales in the Far East alone when he was playing for them. The money doesn't always show only on the pitch.

well no matter what people (including myself) think of him, bringing him to the US was a just as much a marketing move as strategic...and as the hype of him clearly shows it's worked...last I heard his jersey was the no.1 overall in sales in the US...the team will make more than their money back in sales and media exposure alone..and it seems he has generated a hype around football that you normally don't see in the US unless it's a world cup year.
Plus him and posh spice seem like the kind of couple that would thrive in the LA hollywood culture.
yeah incredible...I was watching the game on tv when that happened and I couldn't believe it...Gerrard seems to score at the right time just when they need it most.
Since I was born and raised in Germany soccer was the first sport I actually learned to play and to this day it is still my favorite. After moving to the U.S. I played baseball for 10 years until I went to play in college.
After my first year in college I gave up baseball and switched back to soccer. Ended up coaching the college soccer team for a year after I graduated then played 5 years of men's league til I blew my knee out.
For those of you who have never played or coached the game I am sorry but you will never understand the nuances of the #1 sport in the world. Sure there are younger, more talented players in the game but Beckham brings so much more than talent to the game. His experiences on the world wide soccer stage can be matched by very few in the game today. He is the type player that raises the level of play of every one of his teammates.

What a player makes isn't solely based on the actual skills. He's a marketable guy. They pay him a lot because he makes them a lot, plus his endorsement deals are good.
I didn't even know there were doubters of Beckham, I think everyone knows he's good, I think it was just that nobody gives a shit about soccer.
It is just like movie stars. They generally don't get paid those huge sums because they are really that great at acting. It is because they put bums in seats and money in the pocket of people that hire them. Same deal.
beckham is not over paid.. he is here to help people watch soccer... he probably sells more tickets alone than the whole leagues marketing combined.. he's not paid to just play.. he is paid to be an icon in american soccer..
No matter how much metrosexual he ever looked or how much money he ever did from advertising or how silly name he got to his kid, he still has the finest free kicks kicking technique in decades.
Can't think of many that I would see live and that could challenge him, Gianfranco Zola was not bad in his best years with FC Fiorentina and AC Parma (and established the serie A record in free kick goals when he beat Maradona - I guess he did 50 goals from free kicks?) also Antonin Panenka from Czechoslovakia was an amazing standard situations kicker (the central midfield of the 1976 European Champoins).
