My theory is that the #1 reason social media has grown to play the large role it currently does in both business and social networking is that the medium appeals to the basic human desire of 'being popular'. If that's not the case, then why do the most successful websites/services publicly list the # of friends/followers for each user?
About 10 days ago I decided to test the theory and placed an image with the text 'Be Popular' right next to the Twitter symbol. Sure enough, I've seen a dramatic increase in the # of unsolicited mentions. Humans sure are funny little creatures.
