Google Inc. (GOOG) is shutting down a service that sold and rented online video, ending a 19-month experiment doomed by the proliferation of free clips on other Web sites like the Internet search leader's YouTube subsidiary.

The decision, confirmed late Friday, underscores Google's intention to concentrate its financial muscle and brainpower on developing an advertising format to capitalize on the immense popularity of online video.

It goes on to say that they are focusing on YouTube, with work being done to develop video ads. Don't be shocked if youtube suddenly starts sprouting ads inside the video clips.

Thats gotta be it... ads spammed in the middle of the video or added at the start. The only thing is, how do you get people to visit - typein only? I guess flash click through..

The video will probably pause, show the add and have you select either the "visit site" or "continue movie" button

Of course the video will ad will be clickable. I'm just waiting for them to invent ads which don't need to be clicked to visit the site, but need to be clicked to NOT visit the site...

Try and visit www.metacafe.com and surf around for a while. They now have browser hijacks in the videos or ads.

It is maybe the best news in the world: The "user sourced content" (aka copyright violating scumbags of the world) are having to move to more and more aggressive means to pay their bandwidth bills. it won't be long before the truly evil hackers and spyware installers see this as a great source and step it up big time. At that point, the population will flock away from all of these services.

Next step: spyware infected torrents.

A lot of torrents are already infected. Its easy to spread infected software through torrents

Willing to bet that the guys that sold it to Google could care less that is is being commercialized.

Why else would they buy it if it wasn't to make a buck?

That puts you at about the top 1% in smarts for GFY.

KimJI, there isn't enough infection on the torrent level because it isn't discouraging people. When you get people to stop downloading or be more selective about what they take, then you have something, a sort of virus based darwinism at work.

The RIAA tried to infect the torrents with viruses to get people off torrents.. i don't think that would ever work.

what would stop torrents is a different approach.

Googles action tells a lot about the world market today... thanks for the info.

If you consider that youtube had some million dollar investment to get to where it could be sold then that grass root stuff is BS.

Who would invest and never want their money back?

It was intended to be a commercial venture from the start;
and besides, they built the site by infringing on a million copyrights.

Youtube was a commercial operation that stole!

But diehard fans will say "no way"; because it was not their creative property that's was stolen.

I'd love to see what would hapen to a die hard youtube fan if they actually made a hit movie themselves and I posted it up for free. You can bet they'd cry like a bitch.

Good. If something is worth having it's worth paying for. I don't get where epole thingthat movies music etc should be free. Yes in fantasyland that would be nice but no one works for free and if not for financial incentive very little movies, music games etc would be made. The same people that steal shit would never work for free themselves.
