Yeah, kid is dead, guy is apparently an illegal immigrant (he had two arrests before that for driving without a license) so how is it racist calling him an illegal immigrant? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be mad either.

He left his country, made some problems, apparently has no permission to be in USA, and people should ignore the facts?

I don't judge people by their nationality or religion, but this is far from racist. Some dumbfucks may blacklist other immigrants from that area because of him, but nothing we can do.

What's wrong is that Sally hand crafted it specifically to get a reaction and make a point, using a dead child no less.

If SFGate had posted that headline, and Sally had pasted it here into the subject, I wouldn't have said a damned thing. That would be the editor's fault, not Sally's.

But ask yourself.. What point was Sally trying to make by wording the subject the way it is? It's out of line, doesn't belong here, is blatantly racist - and Sally wrote it, but denies it.

If an editor of a newspaper wants to spin the headlines, that's fine, but when Sally manually adds the racist spin and then pretends like it's not racist and outright denies even writing the subject, that's just a bit ridiculous.

I'm not defending anyone, especially not sally rand, but I'm wondering what does race have to do with the fact that there is a problem with illegal immigration and mentioning the fact that the person involved in this story is in the country illegally? Obviously there is a national debate on this issue, and people on ALL sides of EVERY issue post deliberately provocative titles to threads on this board all the time, in order to get more views.

Sorry, but I see nothing about racism here, except perhaps a deliberate attempt to brand anyone that is against people entering the country illegally as "racist" in order to silence them. Unfortunately I have seen that kind of politically correct fascism more and more these days.

I'm not defending anyone, especially not sally rand, but I'm wondering what does race have to do with the fact that there is a problem with illegal immigration and mentioning the fact that the person involved in this story is in the country illegally? Obviously there is a national debate on this issue, and people on ALL sides of EVERY issue post deliberately provocative titles to threads on this board all the time, in order to get more views.

Sorry, but I see nothing about racism here, except perhaps a deliberate attempt to brand anyone that is against people entering the country illegally as "racist" in order to silence them. Unfortunately I have seen that kind of politically correct fascism more and more these days.

I agree with you on all counts. Its a kind of neo-racism created out of not wanting to be considered racist or something. Strange phenom. It's what people do when they do not understand something but they just don't like it so they try to make it look worse than their not understanding it or not liking it. Not a fan of Sally but if the (now) 3 timer who killed the kid was not here...kid would probably still be alive.

Personally I do not want to live in a community where a felon, tries to change the look of his car after fleeing a felony hit and run - of a 4 year old, then changes cars and hides. No matter the race,

I wish Miss Sally would keep it to biz or go away. Its not even amusing anymore.

This sorta sums up my view:

Racial and cultural issues loom large in immigration. Anti-immigrant groups that purport to be "colorblind" because they focus on economic and environmental issues, actually exploit racial and ethnic stereotypes (about crime, fertility rates, wasteful consumption) to argue against immigration.

Pro-assimilation groups argue that they are only advocating for immigrants to adapt to their new home. Yet they maintain a narrow definition of what it means to be "American" and require that immigrants quickly learn English and uncritically take on the values of a dominant culture.

Both these types of groups discount that racism poses an obstacle for many immigrants. A smaller number of organizations argue that non-White immigrants pose a threat to the nation, which they explicitly define as White, Anglo-Saxon, and Christian.

Even though racism is a factor in most anti-immigrant sentiment, it is important to distinguish explicitly White supremacist arguments from assertions by groups that claim to be racially neutral. These groups do not create tension out of thin air; they depend on the embedded bigotry of a community as a whole. The community's attitudes also must be addressed in a sensitive manner.

Using terms like "hate group," "racist," or "fringe" to describe all anti-immigrant groups tends to polarize debates and alienate people who feel they have legitimate concerns about immigration. A more effective way to reach these people is by carefully dissecting the opposition's analysis. This includes pointing out the misconceptions and resentments the opposition exploits and responding to the valid community concerns the opposition claims to address.
