I always start vague: "I do internet stuff" or "I have an internet business." Vast majority of folks stop there.
Next step in response to "Oh really, tell me more?" type questions: "I build web pages that look good to the search engines and sell ad space on them. You know, like all those ads from Google that you see everywhere?"
I've only ever met like, three people who were genuinely interested enough to press pass that level of detail. It's no secret to anyone - why should it be? It can also be hard to hide when you have your odd days of fame in the media (where they always manage to misquote and get basic details wrong).
