I saw Cowboys and Aliens on the weekend and although it has an amazing cast and director - the aliens lacked depth meaning you don't have anyone to really hate by name. The story line does drag on and not enough actual interaction with Aliens but it was a good few hours snuggled up with popcorn and putting the brain on hold.

Lets see .... some incredibly rich people mostly from LA or Manhattan who are used to having their assholes licked morning, noon, and night .... who think that all Americans are stupid hicks who will believe whatever they're told to believe .... who are looking for an "all star cast" vehicle to showcase their rising sycophants .... who have bought into the research that "The majority of top grossing movies have aliens or magic" ....

Hit the nail on the head! I didn't realize it until now but this was a big part of why it seemed so bland.
