The Sopranos was innovative for its time, but I know a lot of times I would find a story thread in an episode all suspenseful and, by the next episode, The Sopranos would be on to something else, never to return to the story which was happening before.
The Wire, by contrast, comes together really elegantly by the end of each season. I find that these long form cable drams tend to take around 4 episodes to fully get up to speed. I certainly thought, with season 2 of The Wire, that I wouldn't find dock workers remotely as interesting as cops and drug dealers, but they made it work. The Wire is television so good that it makes most other TV pale by comparison.
