Anyone have a Class C motorhome?

I've been actually looking at these things for the first time in my life. I am NOT a "camping" person but I swear these are laid out like a nice hotel room! Leather seats, maple cabinets, electronic everything...

I looked at the Class A and didn't like driving it AT ALL. Felt like I was way too far away from the road for some reason.

Trying to mostly decide between a gas or diesel. I'll be towing a Wrangler most of the time.

My dream one is the Jayco Seneca 34SS but at that price, I want to make sure I still love it 10 years from now.

I've even thought about buying a slightly (2-3) year old model and driving it around for a bit as I wouldn't take such a massive hit on selling it if I wanted to upgrade later. I will probably finance since places around here are offering 4.99% which is less than I'm getting in other investments AND per my CPA a Class A or C can be used as a 2nd home interest tax deduction.

Anyone have any real life experiences? Any brand suggestions? I've been reading RV boards, gone to a show (will go to at least 2 more) and test driven. I'll be renting one for 5 days when it cools off a bit here - don't want to get too far away the first trip

I would probably also only be able to take the two younger dogs

Thanks for any advice (like "you're crazy as fuck since you're picky as hell about hotel rooms" would even be accepted ).

Oh, I plan on being a total redneck I found a hammock stand where I can take my hammock with me, I'll have 2 of the dogs, I'll BBQ outside and go 4wheeling everywhere. I'm getting old - time to do things I haven't done yet

I had a friend who had one dont know the classes, it was like a tour bus. It was beautiful, I remember it cost him 80 grand and this was years ago. He loved going on trips in that thing. RV's are not red neck anymore, there are trailer parks that are actual resorts.Watched a whole thing about them on the travel channel.

The tour bus looking ones are the Class A. The one I'm drooling over has an MSRP of $150K but I can get it for $105K. Which means I'm going to have to do a LOT of cutting back for a couple of years before I can really look into this seriously if I go that route. I just want to make sure I still want it 10 years from now. If I get it, I plan on using it A LOT or else it's not worth it. I'll probably rent different ones at least once every month or so for the next year or so to decide.

Some of the resorts are incredible. Plus there's "boondocking" where you have no hookups where you can easily be the only person for miles on government land.

Motorhomes are cool... I'll get there one day. My girl and I were talking about starting out renting a Class B, just to get a feel for it. I've seen the special on RVing (travel channel) also. Check out ebay

Yeah, I've looked at Ebay too. I wish I had some mechanical/decorating skills - some of the modifications people have done to theirs are just amazing. I've been bookmarking like a mad woman over the past several months since I started looking into this

That would be fun as hell. Drive around the country and hit up spots for a month or so with some friends. Although the kind you are looking into, I don't know if you would want friends along for the trip. Don't think my friends would be allowed they might beat it up a bit

Not a good long term investment.

When gas breaks $6 a gallon you wont be able to give them away and mark my words and bump this thread in 2017.

                    Thanks, already joined

I'm really not looking at it from an economical standpoint - there really isn't one. More of a "would this be more of a hassle than fun?" type deal.

Gas going up will mean EVERYTHING goes up in price: planes, any kind of travel, food, etc. (hell, I just paid almost $5 for a gallon of milk the other day), but I doubt it will keep me home

Though to be honest, the more I look at it, the more it might make more sense to just rent one every few months. It would certainly be cheaper, no taking care of it, etc. The only bad thing would be having to repack stuff but I could have an "RV" box with everything I need to take. I have a "beach house" box I've been using for years that way

The only drawback would probably be being able to bring the dogs and unlimited mileage.

My ex-wife talked me into buying one years ago (forget the class, 28' Champion as I recall).

What a waste of money. Made a decent extra bedroom when I was tired of her shit though.

                              An average C would be a 28 footer at 100 miles a day, $120-160 a day.

I gotta class A 40 footer. Been fulltiming for about a yr now. Heres my suggestion. Dont waste your money on a motorhome. Go with a 5th wheel.

My parents have a 5th wheel RV, 3 slideouts, very top of the line. Be very careful who you buy from, most RV's are built to not last, things fall apart on them rather fast and are expensive to fix. That said, they love theirs (this is their second) and they are not camping people. They got a seasonal spot at one of the best campgrounds around here and are up there almost every weekend this summer.

Yeh, by the time you pay for the diesel motor in a good class A you could buy 2 pulling vehicles. And if you do buy a pulling vehicle go with Ford, and go with Diesel. This is if you want to get serious. Dont go with gas you will regret it.

As for fulltiming. Right now I am on the beach and have beachfront property. If I want I can be in the mountains tomorrow. If I dont like my neighbors, see ya. Wouldnt change it for the world. BTW still have the house just leasing it out. And your CPA is correct.

I'm looking at a C, not an A And yeah, I've heard from almost EVERYONE to go diesel - even those with gas. Well, especially from those with gas ;)

But you're right - once you hit the good C diesels, it gets expensive. I'd have to really look for a tow I wouldn't mind driving all the time like a 250 crew or something.

Thanks for the real life info

I'm looking at a C, not an A And yeah, I've heard from almost EVERYONE to go diesel - even those with gas. Well, especially from those with gas ;)

But you're right - once you hit the good C diesels, it gets expensive. I'd have to really look for a tow I wouldn't mind driving all the time like a 250 crew or something.

Thanks for the real life info

I have one... I use it less than once a year. It's a pain in the ass to work on (I had a water pump go out in it, took forever to replace it) and expensive as fuck to maintain. They are fun and novel at first, a rolling hotel-room on wheels and all, but it gets old pretty fast.
