Fake whois information: Privacy option, how does it work?

Question. Fake whois info is not allowed. When someone discover fake whois info, they can file a complaint, and you risk to lose the domain.

Some registrars do offer PRIVACY for a few bucks. In this case their info is listed, and WHOIS PRIVACY etc is added in the whois information.

Is this the same as, no privacy option, and just using your registrars WHOIS info? And no I'm not doing it this way, but I'm just curious. Since not all registrars offer this 'privacy'option.

Actually that's pretty smart, to an outside observer it would look no different than having whois privacy protection... it might piss off the registrar though... probably not worth the risk over a few bucks...

Justsexxx, that is a TERRIFIC question! The answer is that it is not the same, but you make a good observation. Every registrar is different on the privacy "lingo" that they use, but each will say something along the lines of (yourdomainname)@(theregistraryouuse). So FOR EXAMPLE, using GFY.com as the domain name, and Moniker as the registrar your PRIVACY email would look like [email protected], and any emails would be filtered through our system (ie. complaints, criticisms, etc). Privacy varies in price from registrar to registrar, but both Jrzeygirl and I make sure to give our clients the lowest rate possible on the privacy service! You can give either of us a shout if you need some assistance!

I think he's suggesting that the customer just copy the WHOIS details from a domain with privacy cloaking. If the registrar doesn't specifically block it, then someone viewing WHOIS would never know.

Hey, I just moved to moniker :-) (well still in process) and one of the reasons what the Privacy option. It was still cheaper, then my old one, without it. But what I did there with one domain, that I really wanted to keep secret(for model freaks knocking on my door) I used the registrar address, and my hotmail.com address as email... How exactly is this different then the Moniker way.

Thanks:-) wondered myself why not more ppl are doing this :-) I did it for a few weeks on one domain,and then moved to a registrat who does offer this, so I don't take any risks...But yeah, I thought it was pretty smart too :D

i starting like moniker

usualy registar/reseller placing their info for client domain for public whois. if here some abuse or criminal activity they can give client info by official request only.

at least i have my own domain done like this.

Absolutely correct. The private WHOIS info should not be available for everyone. Is the owner of domain did something illegal, the authorities will get his info from the registrar without any problems.

the key is that the information that is legitimate ie domain disputes, verification test are passed on
