    GFY Graphic Designer Showdown Updates!

    Let's clear up these things once now that we are so close to the contest -

    How exactly does the contest start off? As I see it, there'll be nothing to see until the voting starts, and I suppose we cant pose teasers before that cos that'll give away our tours.

    Has the official site opened up yet?

    Any changes in the rules allowing/disallowing flash?

    jfpdude from prohosters back with the tours hosting?

    What about the tour size - any limits on that?

    What about the number of pages on the tour - any limit?

    Who'll vote and where?

    Will there be a panel of judges?

    Has there been any finalization on the prize distribution?

    The final number of contestants?

                  Doesnt mention a filesize limit - so is there any? 50 Megs of webspace can allow huge tours! We can even embed videos and such.. not sure if that's allowed.

                              200 kb is the max size, it was in the initial rules and on that page.

                                      200 Kb - that's the total html pages combined size, or single html page size, or all html plus images size of whole tour, or html plus images size of each page?

                                                                      I think it's 200k per page including the images and everything used on that page.... hate to have to set a specific file size limitation, but basically keep it within realistic values..... ya know, if each page is 1 meg, that's a little beyond the realm of realistic.

                                                                          Ok, 200 Kbs should be reasonable, although I hope it is not followed too strictly in case someone has one page 210 Kbs.

                                                                              well, 200k per page is pretty generous..... my largest pages top out at 169k at the high end..... I can't imagine an actual page being even 200k.... something that large better convert like hell....

                                                                                              And what about the preliminary voting? Who gets to do that? I hope its a poll where the current results are not shown as that's a bigtime bias in voting. You'll see the site in the top initially keep going up and up. And maybe display sites in a random order each time someone votes to give each site equal placement. Or display them in a clockwork fashion, rotating them alphabetically with each vote.

                                                                                                      yeah but half of that is the screen caps below the main splash design which is itself an average size, im talking 180k - 200k before it loads the "access" or "tour" buttons which are generally at the bottom... screen caps and girl's profiles aren't that much of a problem as they can load as you read and scroll, you'll lose LOTS of visitors if they have to wait for 200k to download before they can even go to the next page though.

                                                                                                          A good design would have the clickable buttons available quite quickly, or at least something to read in html while the graphics load. I'm not sure why we have a size limit in the contest - dont remember reading about it earlier. Does anyone want it?

                                                                                                              i don't mind a size limit.. 200k is PLENTY.. but i don't care either way..
                                                                                                              and yeah a good design definately needs the buttons available without waiting for everything else.... unless the site is particularly small..

Or are we sticking to conventional mosaic single page 640*480 widescreen format tours in the competition? I say take off the size restriction.

                                                                                                                          i bet it does and once again it's because it's a profile page and you can enter before all of it downloads... i've got nothing against this tactic except bandwidth use.. it's perfect for many sites that a single page splash graphic won't do justice ala milfhunter and such sites that are stressing real amatuers and convey the amount of content with individual profiles.

                                                                                                                              PLUS being a movie site, the target market is going to be broadband users and those prepared to wait on dialup.. so you can probably get away with a little fat around the edges..

                                                                                                                                  Thing is, these sites load step by step, its not one single table. Plus there's plenty of text that becomes visible at once. So even someone on dialup will be able to see the tour starting to appear immediately, the pics one by one and the text immediately.

I applied a couple of days back and my name is still not there. I hope I have applied is enough and I can participate in the contest. The last date for applying was today and I have applied before that. Amplitude your Head you can add me to the list on your site at least? That looks bigger to me.
