Take care! Someone's try to steal your domains!

Today I received this e-mail. The domain is registered with NameCheap (I think there's Enom Inc. in whois data). Someone's trying to steal it. I replaced the domain name with www.mydomainname.com because of the security reasons. The domain is expiring in October and some muthafucka is trying to make me transfer it there. This is the only one of my domains that has not whois guard. So, be careful and take care!

This isn't someone trying to steal it -- it's some other domain company trying to get you to pay their huge registration fee. Other registration companies have been doing this for years. They send either an email or or a letter that **looks** like an invoice. Novice people think, "What the hell, I guess this is my domain renewal" and they pay it blindly. The new registrar now gets the recurring money for renewals thereafter.

Throw them in the trash is the short of it.

They won't care. It's up to you to ignore these offers. They are perfectly legal, unfortunately.

There was a company that got in trouble for sending those invoice looking letters to people.. Deceptive practices I think was the deal...

I'd contact the FTC if you want to try to do something..

                    ......
In the mailing to customers of competing domain name registrars, VeriSign's Network Solutions warned that their domain name was about to expire and offered to renew it for a fee. The mailing did not state when the name would expire, which in some cases was months or years off. Also, renewal actually meant transfer of the domain to Network Solutions, making the notices deceptive, the FTC charges.
                    ......

In a settlement with U.S. regulators, VeriSign Inc. has agreed to abstain from marketing practices that allegedly tricked consumers into transferring domain names to its Network Solutions business.

                    .....

The settlement with the FTC follows a class action settlement in January this year in which VeriSign agreed to refund customers who had responded to the mailing and had second thoughts, or give the customer a year of free domain registration if they in fact wanted to renew their domain.

                    Ref.

                      Hope this helps

If you have a domain name host who provides a "lock" for your domain name then you have nothing to worry about... Such a "lock" disables another company of transferring the domain name to another companies server(s)... if your unsure then contact your domain name host, normally your web host, and get them to help you out...

                      Later,

                      .
