Wow, I think this is the first time I see (gasp) code and work shit on GFY :P
Anyhow, this is no hack, when I'm burnt and can't take the tweak shit anymore (and every once in a while I'm challenged beyond patience or capacity) I just fall back on good old fashioned TABLES.
Yep, tables work fine and fix fuckups or cross-compliancy issues like a bazooka finally lights a cigarette - overkill, but job done.
take a look at http://blog.livecamnetwork.com in IE, then in FF.
If you can figure out wtf i'm doing that won't make that right hand column show the background of the div behind it (instead of what it IS doing, which is seeing through everything to the background image) then I'll try to think of something nice to do for you. if it wasn't for bill gates a lot of use wouldn't have jobs online... or pc's in our homes. i know a lot people like to blame bill gates and complain while they're using there windows pc computers but you can't get mad at the guy or company for being successful. its not gates that screwed anything up its other companies that decide to change things... lets face it Microsoft set a lot more standards than later other companies come in and change things and people blame MS for not converting to the new standards.Are you an airhead?
Bill Gates is the fucktard who fucked everything up...
He is the reason why DOS/Windows uses \ instead of the industry standard / when referencing a directory.
He is the reason files you save in notepad are all fucked up on every other system in the world.
He is the reason IE doesn't conform to CSS rules...
You are a fucking sheep and you have been showing it a lot lately.
as for IE... it does something very simple that MS haters complain about... IE fixes errors, if you don't close a tag it fixes the problem and loads the page correctly... FF and other browsers don't do that. Yes, I can see how one can say thats a bad thing, but it's smart in a way. IE has been doing this long before FF came out so why be mad at MS for continuing to fix errors. why not blame FF for not atleast attempting to fix an errorComment

Nope I Love microsoft, and fucking hate macs, but only use Firefox. I hung on forever with IE, but finally it was too much with the pop ups and spyware.Comment

You are correct. The industry when MS became a name was a mess with no standards and a mix of OS's going nowhere. That is probably the main contribution MS has given. Since then - well... the have earned money, but along with the usual problems working against developing standards and trying to retain *their* market share by deviating from what have become "standards".if it wasn't for bill gates a lot of use wouldn't have jobs online... or pc's in our homes. i know a lot people like to blame bill gates and complain while they're using there windows pc computers but you can't get mad at the guy or company for being successful. its not gates that screwed anything up its other companies that decide to change things... lets face it Microsoft set a lot more standards than later other companies come in and change things and people blame MS for not converting to the new standards.Comment

Yep most of these kids here no nothing of the early days. Back in the 80's when I was a teenager every computer used a different operating system that had to be learn. IBM, Apple, Commodore, Texas Instruments, Radio Shack were some of the more popular home computers. ALL had different OSes and a program on one would not work on any of the others. Just imagine if Dells, HPs, Gateways, Acers, E-machines etc all had different OSes and you had to buy programs SPECFICALLY made for that brand of computer? that's what it was like before Windows.Comment

Konq is probably the most difficult to contend with for a graphical browser, since it is very, very, very strict in compliance; this is what Apple built Safari on. However, trying to make anything usable for the text based browsers these days would prove interesting.. ASCII Porn, anyone?Comment

Apple, was on the path that Microsoft took... Just like windows, mac has there OS and standards atleast Microsoft is a lot more flexible than Mac/Apple would of been. Don't forget how everything for the Apple Computer apple created software, accessories, etc. If MS didn't compete and create Windows we'd be complaining about how Apple is to big and not allowing anyone else to create programs for their system.Wow.. As for Unix it would probably of stayed a govt private used OS... if you look at everything is was all a chain reaction for the better. I'd rather have Microsoft being greedy than Apple. Apple is a lot worse when it comes to not wanting anyone to change or mess with there stuffComment

Flexible? Jesus Fucking Christ! Do you guys know ANYTHING about Microsoft? They were NOT flexible. That is why they DIDN'T follow any standards and tried to get everyone else to have to conform to their patented bullshit so they could sell a license to everyone!Apple, was on the path that Microsoft took... I started to go through your css file, but honestly it has so many mistakes it isn't possible for me to notice where the exact problem is. So I will try to just point out a few things, and you can go through and correct them to see if it works.
1) If you define margin and padding to 0 in the body, you don't have to define the zeros again.
2) margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px; should be margin: 0;
3) padding: 100px; is nothing
4) margin: 0 auto auto; should be margin: 0 auto; This is to center the margin spacing but doesn't always work correctly within other elements.
5) width: 100%; 100% widths can cause issues between ie and ff
6) margin: 0 0px 0px 0px !important; should be margin: 0 !important;
7) vertical-align doesn't work correctly in all browsers
8) font: 14px arial, sans-serif; should be font-family: Define it in the body so you only have to define it again when you want it changed.
9) background: Shouldn't have widths or spaces assigned
10) In margin and padding, you need to define all sides: margin: 10px 10px isn't correct, margin: 0 10px 0 10px is correct
.box {
margin: 0px 0px;
border-top: 1px solid #F3FDA4;
;
border-left: 1px solid #cccccc;
border-right: 1px solid #cccccc;
border-bottom: 1px solid #cccccc;
background: #F3FDA4;
}
Should be: You have an extra ; too
.box {
background: #F3FDA4;
background-image:none;
border-top: 1px solid #F3FDA4;
border-left: 1px solid #cccccc;
border-right: 1px solid #cccccc;
border-bottom: 1px solid #cccccc;
}
Trying to force full paddings or margins, or trying to align divs with margins/padding is where IE and FF get bitchy with each other.
Hope that helps, just some quick things that stood out to me.

img {

img { border-width: 0px; }
Your Index page you should go pure css
eg.
<td valign="top" width='100%'>
=
<td style="vertical-align: top; width: 100%;">
<table width="850" bgcolor="#ffffff" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" bordercolor="#cccccc">
=
<table style="width: 850px; background-color: #FFFFFF; border-width: 0px; border-color: #CCCCCC; border-style: solid;">
Hints
-----
Don't use <font=> tags, use CSS and define the font size in px.
Get rid of cellpadding in all your code. It will fuck the most up.
In your head css table, td and img declarations I use these to make the playing field even between IE and FF...
table { margin: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; vertical-align: top; text-align: center; }
td { padding: 0px; vertical-align: top; text-align: center; }
img { border-width: 0px; vertical-align: bottom; padding: 0px; }
Then I build everything up from there.Last edited by Doug E; 07-14-2007, 01:11 PM.Comment

And in the end that doesn't matter if the overwhelming majority use IE. All of you "We're better" crowd just don't get it. Mac fanboys always saying Mac are better than PCs, Linux users always saying Linux is better than windows. Well even if they are right who gives a fuck? What is used more? Is a company going to write software for Linux only beause they have the "better" OS? Or are they going to cater to the 95% that use the "inferrior" OS?Comment

links?Every day more people are using Firefox, and I've been seeing large percentages on my sites which involve streaming and high bandwidth type stuff. So it's important to be FF ready even if you're not seeing the FF traffic yet, you will.
Make your code work for FF and they'll work for everything else. There are some nice CSS plugins that let you pretty much WYSIWYG in the FF browser, too.

Please at the slow rate of adoption FF will be browswer of choice by 50% of surfers by 2020. They've been pushing really hard especially the last 3 years trying to convince everyone that they are superior to IE and still only make up 15%-20%. It's not like thier product costs anything or is hard to find.
The Hun can get more people to download a video of a guy sucking off a horse than Mozilla can get people to switch to FF.Comment

15-20% of the market is pure amazing, very low advertisements, word of mouth marketing and free button marketing.. And the fact that IE is on every built PC int he world pretty much... What an amazing accomplishment, and backed with a 4% growth this year alone.. FF is growing like mad.

Do your own research, I have done mine.. And I have 1000's of domains which have the same growth statistics for FF.. The start of the year FF was 12% average and currently they are 16%.. That's a 4% increase, well not directly.. but in the scale of browser wars.

Nice copout. Stating facts then telling doubters to go prove your own figures. Nice. How about just showing me where you got your data from.
Your own stats don't mean shit. I bet someone here could show you they hav 1000s of sites showing a 4% DECREASE in FF usage.And I have 1000's of domains which have the same growth statistics for FF.. Hate on Firefox fanboys all you want.. but.. if you are not using Firefox while developing your sites, you are really doing yourself a disservice. Even if you dont care about standards, or how your pages render in it, it has so many time-saving web developer extensions, its ridiculous. No other browser has anything that compares to the web dev firefox extensions. Opera has a lot of great web development features, but still doesnt approach Firefox.And in the end that doesn't matter if the overwhelming majority use IE. All of you "We're better" crowd just don't get it. Mac fanboys always saying Mac are better than PCs, Linux users always saying Linux is better than windows. Well even if they are right who gives a fuck? What is used more? Is a company going to write software for Linux only beause they have the "better" OS? Or are they going to cater to the 95% that use the "inferrior" OS?
Hell, even many Microsoft engineers are Firefox users, and have been for a long time.ICQ: 284903372Comment

Also, coding to web standards just makes a lot of sense. The standards are very clearly outlined, well documented, and most importantly... consistent.
Sure, IE might be able to figure out how to render your incorrect code the way you intended it to be rendered.. today. But you dont know what might change tomorrow. You don't know what rules its using to sort out your messy code. You dont know if its a bug, if it was intended behavior, or even if it will still work the same way on the next MS patch day.ICQ: 284903372Comment

This is just funny, you need to learn wtf you are talking about because you are making yourself look stupid.
Exactly...
Let the master teach you.. I read, 1000's of blogs posts/articles and forums monthly. I have for 10 years. Just from blogs: "over the last 30 days you read 2,051 items" <-- google reader if you are wondering.
The data on FF is very open, has been blogged about, and continues to be talked about in social media rather heavily. FF has been moving quickly up the ranks in the last 6 months, it's a fact not a theory.
Yes, I'm sure some free site that gets 500 hits a day can show they had a decrease in ff traffic. But for the rest of us, that isn't the case.
You will lose any statistic argument with me, period.
