I think it's fine, as long as you're a loving parent. For example, take a 3 year old showing a screwdriver in a light socket. Do you really think he's going to give a shit if you sit him down, try to explain things to him, and maybe give him a time out? Probably not. A quick, swift slap in the ass will make him remember not to do that much more effectively though.
