Will Free Downloads Eventually Kill The Adult Internet Industry?

What % Of The Adult Internet Biz Has Been Destroyed By Free Downloading?
I can't believe how many people try to justify free downloading
They act like it's their God Given Right....
Let's leave this topic to the experts aka Gene Simmons.
"ENTER GENE SIMMONS....."There?s no more record industry". "When Kazaa and all the download sites went up I said this is robbery, this will kill the music industry ? you will all be sorry." The record industries are just about to roll over and die, the entire industry is in chaos because anything you give away for free will come back and fuck you up." The Record Industry is Dead because of the fans. The Fans Fucked you, they took it for free and they didn't want to pay for it. "...IS HE WRING?

record/cd stores aren't doing very well any more, the only ones that seem to be around are the ones that sell the players

he is spot on. and they will also kill porn.

all of you asshats who support companies who support and fund these sites are to blame when it happens. all of your surfers who steal the content, you are to blame also.

shit, its already going down, just look at how much harder you have to work to make money these days.

the human race is already set for destruction. in The Matrix they said it best that humans are a virus and move and destroy every place they go. the internet is not exempt to that, we are quickly destroying that as well.

The music industry will never be dead! - emphasis has just moved away from the mega record labels an towards the artists, therefore money has moved that way too.

I don't think we will see a band as big (rich) as say The Beatles again because there is so much music now available to the masses. Their will be more artists, but they will be less well off.

Artists will sell directly to their fans, and make enough music if they are good enough - record labels will shrink.

PORN!?! well i think there will be a culling of shit porn sites on the scale of Auschwitz. No longer will you be able to film yourself getting sex from some skank and make money from it.

The money will shrink, but the quality will improve - and compared to working 9 till 5 it will still be worth being in the industry.

Nothing ever dies... it just evolves... or dissimulates to be used as a resource by another thing.

                It's the nature of things.

Still doesn't mean we shouldn't take action when someone's taking a dump in our water supply.

of all the people to say that gene simmons is the last person i would expect to think that way..

kiss is the perfect business model for why even FREE cd's wouldnt kill the music industry ..

                  Merchandising.

kiss has always made more off its merchandise , concerts and sponsorships , than its cd royalties..

Porn on the other hand is alot harder to have "concerts" and "merchandise" for..

Did radio kill the music industry ? how much is radio ? free

is that really true that they made more off of merchandise than the music royalties themselves?

You're high. What's the point of seleing to the fans when they expect it for free. All it takes is one dipshit fans to upload thier songs on the internet and they can forget about making any money on sales. I don't get assholes that wil pay $50 for a concert ticket but won't shell out money for the CD the convert is promoting. And don't say because the music sucks because if it did then you wouldn't be paying $50 to see a shitty concert.

The answer to your question is NO. if anything i believe it will create more traffic to the sites leading long term to more sign ups for content the user "believes" they have not seen yet.

nothing new. just check out all these tube-like sites. big tgp/mgp submit rules - they demand high-quality content submits for keep their bookmarkers.
bookmarkers - freeloaders. they maybe good for do some traffic trades - but very low % of them actual purashe memberships to paysites.

all these free downloads - killing ratios. sure if these movies not are drm encoded for limited view time, but i think not.

What people fail to realise, or do and don't want to talk about it, is the surfer finds these sites cater to his needs better than our product does. Don't give me the excuse that it's free because nothing is for free. These sites meet the average surfers needs and are drawing a lot of traffic.

The pirate sites have to cost a lot of money to take the business away from us or we have got it terribly wrong. We sell a 30 day product with anything from 50 to 500 videos. The surfer downloading half or even a quarter of this is burning a lot of BW. Get hundreds of thousands of them, and this is what is needed to threaten us, and we are talking about major hosting costs. Unless we are under threat from thousands of kids in their bedrooms doing it on a P2P basis.

No these sites have found a way to make a profit from delivering porn cheaper or free and it's not because they are stealing content. Content cost is less than 10% of the turn over. So a site operating the same system as we do and stealing content could offer a membership for $27 a month.

So are we selling what the surfers need to buy or what we need him to buy to pay for the way we work?

Remove the content costs, advertising, promotion, affiliate costs and you can deliver a months membership for $10 or less. 30 days for $10 or 33 cents a day. Look at the worse case scenario, to deliver a porn movie of 20 minutes to a surfer and you're under 10 cents. A porn consumer will be happy with 20 minutes.

Now think of how you can make enough money to make a profit out of such a low cost surfer. Sell a program to decode the movies, sell advertising, upsell, cross sell. Lot's of opportunities.

Will free porn kill the business? No way, they need us to supply the movies to steal.

Will it change the way we work? It already has for some. They advertise on the free site or are owned by programs, dating sites , etc.

When your business plan meets your needs first and the buyers needs second you run the risk from people who do it better.

Please don't attack my figures. To take the business away from us will cost money. Money that has to be found.

This is one of the (smaller) reasons why I've been promoting "LIVE" adult content since day 1. You can't download/rip/torrent, etc. a live video chat session. Of course, you can save it, burn it on CD or whatever but it's missing the main ingredient and why the customer paid in the first place: Interaction.

If you think the music industry is dead give your head a shake... Ever see a little show called "American Idol"?

If that isn't the next evolution of the music industry I don't know what is.

The porn industry will evolve just like it always has, selling porn memberships for $30 a month is not the only way to skin the proverbial cat.

It is when you build a model that dictates $20 of the $30 has to paid out to getting the $30.

For free porn to take away our business it has to take away the surfers. It has to do this by getting traffic and keeping it. Then it has to pay for the hosting of 1 million members burning up the equivilant of a 30 day membership. That's a lot of porn to be delivered for "free".

Do the free porn people have a better business plan than us?

Maybe but you will never stop technology so the only way you can really beat them is give them something they WANT to pay for. Record companies aren't just having troubles due to free downloads, its the shitty filler on so many worthless cds that should of never been released in the first place. Its also big business' fault for moving so many jobs, ect. Many people who used to spend x amount per month on music and movies can't afford it any more so they download instead.
you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..

The answer to that should be obvious. You can't download the concert experience. Sure you can download bootlegs but its not the same as being there. With cds, there is no difference besides the packaging. Also bands get a bigger cut of ticket sales than cd sales, so you are essentially supporting the band more by going to the concerts.

Just like the music industry, our industry must evolve as well.

When napster and other file sharing software came on the market, the record industry responded by suing those companies and now individual user instead of learning how to make money off of the new technology. Obviously if you can get something for free, people are going to take advantage of it. What we are seeing now in the music industry is companies merging and therefore consolidating their assets so that they have a bigger catalogue of music to work with. Already, companies such as Universal are little more than a distribution channel for smaller record companies like ATO. The music industry is now seeking to make money through other avenues such as licencing their artists music for commercials, video games, and movies. Additionally, they are selling ring tones by the millions at a greater profit than the 99 cent downloads.
The music industry, much like the tobacco industry is crying because they have to change their business model and they just don't know how to yet. But the key here is that they are learning. Apple has responded to consumer requests to remove DRM from their downloads which has helped to increase sales.
Soon, the record companies will probably look to make additional money from touring, which has traditionally been where the bands make the majority of their money.
Further, (and you can see this happening now) the record companies are starting to trim off the fat and sign only those acts and bands that are going to sell records and not invest money in bands that really aren't ready to be stars yet. This is going to force unsigned bands to work harder and to pay for their own recording and distribution, which really isn't that different from the old days.
Myspace and similar sites have also helped to provide very cheap promotion for up and coming bands, something that did not exist ten years ago. This fact has helped the record companies save on promotion in print and radio.
The bottom line is that the record industry is responding and learning how to keep afloat in the digital age. And more importantly, they are learning how to make money despite the fact that record sales keep slowing down.

What does this mean for the porn industry? Simple, we will learn to evolve and prosper even as people download our products for free. People need to realize that the people who pay for porn are the people who don't know where to download free porn, or have no interest in finding it. Downloading movies off of file sharing sites is not a new problem for us. Everyone here has a different way of promoting and selling their product, and that is not going to change because of file sharing, or download sites. The porn industry will just have to evolve and learn to make money alongside the free sites. I would venture to guess that the advent of TGPs and MGPs do more to hurt sales than downloading ever will.
The bottom line is that, like other industries, we will have to evolve as technology and peoples understanding of it does. There is lots of loot to be made here. And lets be honest, we are at the forefront of what happens on the internet. The porn industry is deeply entrenched in the internet business and we are not going away any time soon.

They fucked their fans for years with overpriced crap merchandise & have the nerve to blame the people they ripped off for eating into their massive earnings?!

                                                          what a dickhead.

The music industry isn't fucked, the old style is and a new one is emerging. Just like the adult industry ... back in the day porn converted better because there weren't free sites, but the only people annoyed by that are folks like myself who ran paysites & made good money from them. I had a choice ... either adjust my business model and get with the times & changes, or move on and do something else. As with any changing industry there's new opportunities always opening up.

If customers get ripped off long enough they'll eventually find a way to get around paying & fuck back!

But you have to admit, you don't have to be a major computer geek to know how to find free porn. I'm not talking about bittorrent -- there are tons of forum sites with rapidshare and megaupload links. I'll bet anything that these file storage sites are about 80% pirate porn clips. Anyone can find this stuff with google.

                                                              Here is something logical...

The Internet Providers are the ones making big money in Adult.
The free porn that comes with it is more than 1/2 the incentive to get internet access.

It is really fucking up the business. Worse, copyright holders aren't taking action to stop the rip offs, so as a result, the thieves are getting bolder and bolder, taking more and more business away.

Copyright holders need to start sending DMCA notices to Google & Yahoo, asking them to remove listing. It sucks ass to search for something like a Nubiles girl and find that 8 out of the 10 listings on Google for most of the girls go to torrent sites. Copyright holders need to take action or nobody will promote your product.

It started with TGPs and got worse from there. You can still make decent money, but it's alot harder nowadays.

The problem isn't just more competition, it's definately too much free content to a huge extend. It comes with some nasty side effects like regulation enforced on the industry, since all this free content is available to minors as well, it puts the industry in the spotlight and makes us look worse every day.

The industry won't die, but it's a lose-lose situation long term, it requires more and more traffic to make the same money.

                                                                                    Comment

faster broadband = faster our unprotected product spreads.

That's true, but there was piracy long before the internet/technology/broadband though ... its the nature of humans to try to get something for free that would normally cost money so extra bandwidth just scaled the level it was happening on as it made it easier. But then the entire world has sped up 10 fold in the last decade so I think that's relative too ...

I remember my parents always had porn tapes being traded in and out of our household ... and none of them were in pretty cases with pricetags! I only remember back this far, but I'm sure there's some old folks (heheheh) here who can think of an example before video tapes. LOL

What's funny though is a surfer didn't start the free porn game ... a webmaster did when he put up a password site & exploited other people's business models to make his own. There was such a moral outcry back then about that, which is hilariously hypocritical. Its like how we trained the miliary in the middle east and are now wondering how they know so much about our methods.

Surfers will always be prepared to pay for value - in other words, paying you for the convieniece of not having to search for free versions of the content they crave elsewhere.

You might not get as much $ per sale, but if the content is compelling enough, chances are good that he will come back again later - not least, since you gave him the option not to commit to a monthly subscription in the first place...
I agree. The porn consumer needs 20 minutes, not 30 days. If traffic costs $20 out of every $30 spent, and it has to spend $30 to satisfy a 20 minute need, then we are vulnerable to people selling the product at 50 cents or less. Or bearing the costs to make a profit elsewhere.

tabasco you are right then if the cost of putting up a torrent site is not born by the people putting it up. They don't need hosting, BW, sites and servers? There will always be people sharing on the P2P basis. It will never be enough to seriously dent a 3 billion dollar industry.

DH you are dead right. When you sell an over priced product that is such bad value, throwing more people at it is the only solution. Maybe spending even more than 66% on traffic is the answer, lets give less content for more money and see how that solves the problem. It's your thinking that has put us into this situation.
