Where I come from parents didn't have to spank their child. The child only ever had to get the belt once and they learned that when they saw the belt coming off, they butter stop whatever the fuck they're doing. A normal kid only needed the belt once in his life.
It worked and I think its right and OK. It's not that I was beat hard by the belt that one time, it's that it was done in a way that I learned to fear the belt.
Something my Mom did that I hated at the time ... started charging me rent as soon as I got a job. It was a nominal amount, but it taught me that I couldn't just blow all of my money and had to tend to my responsibilities first. I didn't understand it at the time, but now that I am older, it's something I will do with my own kid(s).
I also just remembered that I could pretty much use the car whenever I wanted, but I had to return it with a full tank of gas. She was good at keeping it full, so I just had to replace what I used ... but it was an 86 mercury cougar and that thing ate some gas. It was only like $2 a gallon though ... don't know if I could do the same with my kids these days. I actually agreed with that one at the time because I had a car I could use pretty much whenever she wasn't at work and didn't have the other financial responsibilities that came along with it. She gave me the car on my 17th birthday and then all expenses become mine.
She was a struggling single Mom at the time (struggling more than she ever let me know), as my Dad had left and wasn't paying child support ... so in hindsight I think I was helping her as much as she was helping me.
