I don't have kids yet, and I grew up with "old-school" parents -- so my ass was no stranger to a belt. My mom is from West Virginia coal country, so I've also been whipped with a switch a few times.
I've always believed that the current generation of punks comes from the fact that no kid has been spanked since 1990. My thinking has shifted ever since I've been raising my dog for the last few years. If I can get his crazy ass to be good citizen without striking him, it should be possible to get a child to do the same.
I'm not trying to act like I know everything because I have a dog, but I think that once you hit your dog(or child), the relationship is ruined forever, and its all based on fear. I think being a leader and allowing them to love and respect you is a better way to go.
If they get totally out of control, once they leave the house they'll encounter someone who won't take their bullshit -- and get the beating you never gave them.
As one poster already said, I think its a lazy way to discipline.
