Why do you ask the question here? No one here can answer it. Only the processor can answer why the subsequent attempt passed, because only the processor has access to the ACTUAL TRANSACTION RECORD!
Ask them for the audit trail for this customer. It could have been from MANY things, including switching from a proxy to a non-proxy. If the declines came from the banking system, it could be AVS-mismatch, bad validating number, literally anything.
If you do an historical analysis I think you'll find these kinds of approvals have a higher chargeback rate. This customer could easily be a carder, looking for the "sweet spot" where the card is accepted. Or too drunk to accurately enter his credit card details. Things to look for: signup was through an affiliate, the customer never logged in, or if logged in spent no time in the member's area.
Consider yourself lucky if this customer doesn't end up charging back.
