FYI: Vietnam was part of the French indo-China empire and we stepped in to stop the spread of communisum. We were fighting not only North Vietnam but a silent China as well. And politicians where afraid esculated military control would bring on WWIII so they capped military ability to fight the war.

Germany actually has the most technologically advanced mobile artillery right now. I can't remember what it is they have, but it beats our howitzers hands down. Probably one of the few things any country will ever have military that is more advanced than something coming out of the U.S. But we spend the most on the air force.

I dont think these factors are important for an army any longer. The two best armies of 20th century - USA and Russia - sucked, the first one in Iraq, the second one - in Chechnya. Why? Because the way of fighting has changed radically. No more enemy forces standing in front of you on a battlefield. No more weapons pointed at each other. Nowadays, the potential enemy is everywhere and nowhere (so-called terrorism). That's why armies must change their strategies to deal with it. But they reinforce their weapons and increase the number of solders instead. What for? world has changed, it doesn't work any more.

Not terror, but Islamic revolution forced the US out of Iran and the civilized Iranians out of power. I agree though, I don't believe Islamic terror could win a war and conquer anything but for making armies retreat we're probably going to see it in Iraq and depending on how things go in Afghanistan we could see it there too.
