I expected someone would mention that guy. I know he uses different nicks, talks about himself in third person and also debates against his other nicks.
But I wonder if his behavior is a sign of such a disorder or rather just a "game" or a special form of entertainment.
My thread was a more or less serious question about those who suffer from such disorder. The movies that I quoted were extreme examples, but I think overall that's an interesting issue if one person develops two or more totally different personalities.... - not only on a message board, but also in real life.
Perhaps some GFY'ers who seem totally normal have also different personalities which show up in different scenarios (or would having such a disorder mean that a persons' different personalities would show up evidently in each situation where the person spends a lot of time on, so in other words on GFY as well?). I'm far from being an expert but IMO this disorder doesnt reffer to bipolar disorders, its rather connected with having really multiple personalities and often (or always?) not being aware of it. That can be "funny" to watch but also quite dangerous probably, especially if these personalities are totally different.

personally, i don't know someone who has that DID thing or multiple personality. it's like ...it's so hard to detect if a certain person has it, i mean one in every hundred people or even one in a thousand.
but one noticeable tv series that features as such is Heroes... yeah, the lady there (i forgot the name) that portrays like a psycho-killer. There she has a child and a husband, all of them have powers or so-called mutancy. Her real personality is a loving mother to her child but when the personality sinks in her, she become evil and kill people.

i've never known someone with multiple personalities PERSONALLY, but here are a few experiences i've had/heard of:
one day when i was working at the pharmacy, i was trying to fill someone's prescription and i was having trouble getting their insurance to pay for it. i asked them if they'd mind waiting so that i could get it straightened out for them and so that they wouldn't have to pay for it 100% out of pocket. they said they would, and they stood there at the counter (so they could hear everything that i said). i called their insurance company and explained that i was having trouble getting the claim approved and asked them to look into it. the representative explained to me that there are notes in this guy's file that he has multiple personalities, and INSISTS that they all be listed as seperate people in his insurance records and on his insurance card (here, i had thought that all of the other names listed were children). he said that we had to use different numbers for different personalities/names, and that i was using an incorrect number. he told me what to use and it went through. i couldn't ask much further into anything since he was standing right there, but the representative insinuated that it was a real challenge to deal with this guy and that he was quite used to having to handle things like this.
my sister's boyfriend is a lawyer. he once represented a man who had multiple personalities. one of these personalities was a female, and THAT personality, happened to be the one that was on trial. he said he had a hell of a time trying to figure out what would be the best way to phrase things, and if he should refer to his client as "he," or "she," when having to state such.Comment

Personalities are not particularly known to be dangerous - they are basically coming from the same person. Assuming the person is not dangerous, it is unlikely they are much of a problem. Personalities can be male or female, irrespective of the gender of the victim.
Detecting a personality change is not that easy - it's kinda subtle and most times nobody would have a clue. Know a few people who have MPD - the personalities were usually created at a time of trauma during childhood and usually during an assault. Only me, but I feel sorry for these individuals - they had to carry that baggage into their adult life and it does cause a degree of internal stress.
It is possible to dispose of the personalities, but takes a long time and professional help. I had no clue of DID till I met some victims and that did have an impact on me - stunning. It's hard to comprehend how any adult can cause that much damage to a child. Since then, I've done anything I can to aid these people, tho the only real "solution" is attempt to evaluate the numbers of personalities and slowly dispose of them - and that's a specialist field.
There can be a "funny" side to it as well and, least in the instances I know of, it's better to work on the funny side and make light of any problems and keep smiling

Multiple Personality Disorder is such a rare thing it's highly unlikely anybody here knows a person that has it.
Don't confuse Multiple Personality Disorder with something more common such as Schizophrenia.7Comment

Na.. seriously - it's not some fantasy rubbish and not talking about imagined disorders or schizophrenia. These are, varying, but diagnosed cases of MPD and the trauma cause is known - child assault. Tho it can be other than child assault - basically starting from a traumatic experience.
I only know a few of these people well enough to know the real background/history - and it's not a palatible history and impossible to deny. During treatment, it's possible to evoke personalities, but they may not wish to talk to a doc - he's an adult (or a "big person" in child lingo) and the personalities exist to protect the victim But.. over time information comes out and it's possible to extract the appox years during which the assaults took place. The victims (in normal mode) usually know of the assaults - the personalities kick in during a time needed to block out or protect.
There are MPD victims within law enforcement, sometimes attached to child protection units, and they understand what is going on. These officers are more than capable of doing a good job despite their baggage and a couple I know of spend extra time off the job assisting victim support orgs.
One amusing incident was when one of these officers was getting professional help. After a session with a doc, the doc asks - "Did you know you wrote a paper on forensics which is rated very highly?" *lol* The officer had no clue of this tho was educated along criminal justice lines. This was the first time and years later that it was known there was cred to something that was written a few decades previously. I had a chat with that officer and asked about this - replies "Pfft! So I'm an academic next - what do I know?" *lol*
Seriously - it's not some fake crap - it's very serious, but can have it's funny moments.Comment
