I agree and never said there is anything wrong with what the cable stations do. I'm just saying you can't compare a station like Fox News or MSNBC that are primarily focused on pundits to CNN which is more focused on the news.Because you cant repeat the news for 24 hours and expect people to keep watching.
You don't really think there should shouldn't be any television shows where people debate about whether or not they agree with what is going on in the world do you?
If you want the news and nothing but the news thats exactly what Headline News does (for about 20 hours a day anyway). It also attracts the least amount of viewers out of the 4 cable news networks. Television is a business and their business is selling commercials. The only reason there is any programming on television at all is because thats the best way to get people to watch the commercials.
I wouldn't be too sure about that. News Corp hasn't had to pay taxes in 2 of the last 4 years and when they do pay, they pay substantially less then other media companies. The Republican Congress changed a law on the percent of media share you can own to match the exact number he wanted to own.Comment

True.
They got a tax deferment. They still have to pay taxes, just not right now. Like when you put money into an IRA. They do that to encourage investment.
They changed it to the exact amount he already owned, not that he wanted to own. He would have got that from a Democratic congress, too. You can't pin that on Republicans. Murdoch is a big time player in Washington.
http://www.smh.com.au/text/articles/...351454788.html
An analysis of campaign finance records shows that since 1997, Republicans have received only a slight majority - 56 per cent - of the $4.76 million in campaign donations from the Murdoch family and News Corp's political action committees and employees.
Since Democrats won control of Congress in the 2006 elections, the company and its employees have given more than twice as much to Democrats as to Republicans, the records show.
"We did seek more balance," said Peggy Binzel, Murdoch's former chief in-house lobbyist. "You need to be able to tell your story to both sides to be effective. And that's what political giving is about."
Murdoch has an army of outside lobbyists, who have reported being paid more than $11 million since 1998 to address issues as diverse as trade relations, programming decency and internet regulation. One firm focuses almost exclusively on parts of the tax code that affect News Corp.Comment

Cynical view, but sounds more truth than anythingBecause you cant repeat the news for 24 hours and expect people to keep watching.

This is the problem for any news channel - ie, keeping the public attention for a period and having to serve up the same recycled stories for 24 hours. Broadcasters who rely on advertising for their funding, and obviously most do, are going to find that one hell of a challenge.
Tho this costs money, there is nothing wrong with "indepth features" expanding on the core news stories. CNN have attempted to do that with what they describe as their "special investigation" series, but - that means sending crews over the globe and milking (repeating) these stories/documentaries till every viewer flips the channel button.
The pressure is also on to sensationalise stories where they can with dramatic-sounding voiceover artists etc. That is probably the start of killing what can be otherwise a straight and balanced news feature. I've seen the same footage (can't remember if it was CNN) broadcast in other countries with a different voiceover/commentary to "localize" the material - but the overall impression can be very different.
As you said, there is nothing wrong with studio productions - they are cheaper to produce and can give an insight into whatever the story of the day is. The "knack" in getting this meaningful is down to the editor in being able to introduce a panel of guests representing all viewpoints - not just two, and in particular, having guests who have some personal experience. A couple of production crews have been excellent at this and their programming has lasted decades - usually an hour a week, sometimes more, but managing to keep an audience engaged. This does not necessarily mean confrontation, tho often may be, but generally each guest has something valid to contribute. There is also an obvious need to have a totally impartial anchor and editorial staff - it's prob more like a normal newspaper.
But... there is a problem/possible conflict with that when a broadcaster is relying on advertising. On certain topics ad agencies are not going to buy time, - not least because they don't want their product aligned with the news subject. (Agencies don't want time on programming involving images or war or certain contraversial subjects.)
In a few countries there is "non commercial" TV - the backgrounds may vary as to why this is, but generally the quality of programming is much higher. Two corps come to mind in the UK alone - one is the BBC and the other Channel 4 which is a commercial channel. But.. for a commercial channel, Channel 4 has produced some excellent programming over decades and has archives of "non studio" material covering a vast array of topics and, at least most of them are fairly well balanced and produced by serious reporting staff. Only my
but consider Channel 4 to be much higher standard than CNN although CNN boasts a lot of facilities. It may be a matter of choice in reinvesting higher percentages of funding in programming quality - who knows?

I don't think it's really fair to compare the deferment of $9,400,000,000 in profit to the measely $3000 we can defer to our IRA tax-free.
Fact is that neither one of us would be able to do that and in fact, our companies paid more taxes then the mega-billion dollar News Corp. I would think tax cuts should be fair to everyone, or at least help those who could use it more.
Why can't I pin it on anyone who is bought and paid for by Murdoch? If Democrats were paid off to vote in favor of him, I'd call them out on it too. These things happened under a Republican Presidency and Republican Congress.
You stated that Murdoch receives nothing in return for his conservative sided coverage of the news. I'm simply pointing out that he received a lot of tax breaks and congressional votes from Republicans that a normal guy like you or me would never get.Comment

If you look at News International's interests/activities globally - these no way align with Foxnews US. Example... the girl who was prompted/trained to do that interview could just as easily been one of Murdoch's "tits of the day" feature in one of his daily national newspapers elsewhere.Murdoch has an army of outside lobbyists, who have reported being paid more than $11 million since 1998 to address issues as diverse as trade relations, programming decency and internet regulation. One firm focuses almost exclusively on parts of the tax code that affect News Corp.
The rightousness and moral stance portrayed by Foxnews stops at the US borders - it's all about a buck and whatever needs to be said to grasp that buck.Comment

the law of fives indeed... watching that interview really made me feel sick but all this talk about her has got me to thinking...
...about just how wonderful it would be to have her on all fours w/ her bony little ass looking up at me like a small asian apple w/ a large container of crisco sitting close at hand. as i reach in for a generous handful i smile smugly as i notice of the yellowing turgid edges of the lard along with a smattering of gritty scum pressed into the putrid lube.
she moans and squirms in her obviously aroused state as i first work my thumb past the northern edge of her rubbery little sphincter and run it all the way around counter-clockwise, noting the small swollen nodules that reside along the south-eastern inner rim of her anal duct. Hooking her hole open with my thumb to afford a better view of the clustered dark ruby pustules that glare back at me with menace like glazed cherries, I dip my opposing index finger into her nether regions and squeeze one of the healthier examples until it pops with an audible release and dark pus enriched blood runs between the tips of my digits and runs in a small concise line over the edge of her stretched sphincter and down the curve of her cheek in a most fetching manner. hemorrhoids, gonorrhea, or lesions, i don't bother tasting.
i pull my soiled thumb from her asshole and smear the palmful of dirty crisco directly over her distended anus, forcing as much of the smelly lard into her rectum with a gentle but decisive push as all four of my fingers slide with liquid ease into her ass... placing my other hand square in the small of her back i push her pencil eraser nipples into the concrete and her face to the left, forcing her ass back and upward as i admire the sight of her buttered asshole blossoming open like a hothouse orchid and showing its hungry mouth to me with slick, greedy lips.
I bring my face level and close to her already gaping asshole and inspect the pink distended lips with a clinical eye, not missing the telltale series of fine lines and stretch marks that make up this obviously well-traveled little fleshy opening into the dark. This shouldn't prove too difficult to get going i decide, and after wrapping my free arm around her thin upper thighs for leverage i begin to work my fist up into her dirty bowels... with three quick twists my entire hand is absorbed by her hungry asshole and she growls under her breath deeply as a tremor runs down her spine causing her left knee to beat a heated tattoo upon the cold floor. Rotating my hand to the left as I flex my fist tightly soon has me in 10 centimeters deep past my wrist-line and as the muscles in my arm and shoulder bunch together and work in a piston-like fashion i hammer upon her bowels with glee as her stretched thin sphincter rolls somewhat up and down my wrist like a tube sock... flecks of brown-stained crisco are flying about under my tender efforts between her shuddering little buttocks as i pound that little satchel of tissue for all its worth.
i look down to her pretty face pushed into the gritty floor and delight in the misted over eyes and pooling saliva under her scratched cheek and decide its time to see what she's really made of... i thrust my arm deeply into her quavering form and twist back and forth roughly as i try to work the big part of my forearm into her asshole as she spasms and writhes heatedly. She begins to howl like a virgin katoey pinned under kman himself as i bear down and begin digging for gold...
er, brb..
...promise her a defamation, tell her where the rain will fall..Comment

No, I'm saying that shows like O'reily and Hannity and Rush pander to the extremest. They understand their fan base and give them what they want to hear. There are moderate conservatives, but when you bring a porn guy onto your show for the sole purpose of attacking him and calling him names, you are not doing that as a way to inform your progressive audience, you are doing that to show the bible thumpers you are still on their side.
That said, most of the US is not conservative. Most are moderates. There are right leaning and left leaning moderates, but most people in this country fall somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum. Look at the election with Kerry VS Bush. Bush got 53 million votes and Kerry got a little over 50million. Kerry is one of the most liberal senators in the country. If most of the people in the US are conservative then why was the election even close?
The reality is that about 20% are hardcore bible thumbing conservatives, about 20% are unwashed hippy liberals and the remaining 60% fall somewhere in the middle.
Before you quote Fox's great ratings as proof that most of the country is conservative you have to understand that that is inaccurate measure. Most news organizations have a left leaning slant on the news. if you want your news to have that type of slant you have dozens of choices. If you want your news with a right leaning slant you really only have one channel to turn to. Fox brings in most of the conservative views and the liberals are spread out over the many other choices.Comment

I agree 80%.
A difference is, I find John Stewart entertaining, and both feel sorry for and am a little scared of those that find these pundits entertaining.
One focuses on comedy - these seem to focus on hate, and an inflated - and misplaced, imho - sense of moral high-ground.-D.
