Who are the biggest video sites? What format do they use? I think Flash is best for online, mpg for download.

For a viewer, two most important factors for videos are probably Quality and Speed. Unfortunatelly in many cases those two are also conflicting with each other. With everything considered including compatibility, flv and wmv should be the top two choices which kind of balanced those two factors much more nicely than other formats, with flv being faster on the speed side and wmv being better on the quality side.

QuickTime Streaming Server

Our site went with QuickTime because the server is free (well, it's actually part of the Mac OS X Server operation system). We couldn't afford to go with anything else, but QuickTime has a much larger user base now that iPods/iTunes is everywhere.

We also provide WMV downloads, but we only stream in QuickTime.

Just to clarify... most porn (and non-porn) video sites do not encode to flash for a very good reason (let's exclude youtube and huge corporations)...

It takes a HUGE amount of processing power to encode LFV files in a decent quality, whereas quicktime, wmv and RM files can be encoded in not time, with almost no special requirements to make them available.
