How can anybody compare two different sports?
You need to be a total nutter to play either -
I prefer to watch rugby tho, cos the game starts and doesn't stop till it finishes - American football stops every two seconds and the defence takes a break while the offence is on and visa versa -
I think the Yankee game would be very different if the same players had to stay on the field all the time and the game didn't keep stopping.Comment

When the football World Cup was played in America, they wanted FIFA to change the rules so that the game could be played in segments - Had that of happened, it would have fucked up the game totally
Your game is played "by plays" I suspect for the tv - Dragging everybody off the field to bring on a defence gives half the team a long break - Don't you think if the same players stayed on all the time and stoppages were kept to a bare minimum, players then would be showing just how fit they really were? It is difficult to compare an American football goal kicker (who may only have 10 seconds action throughout a whole game, against his rugby equivalent, who would be running his bollocks off for the whole game, taking and giving body slams, as well as kicking goals.Comment

Well, now I can see you don't REALLY understand the game. Even the kickers know they aren't considered "real" players. I can see what you mean that leaving all the players on all the time would change the game, but it would completely change the game. Guys on the offensive line can really only do that part of the game, they're perfect for what they do, but there's no way they could track down a wide reciever and tackle him. It's like anything else. You don't use the same tool for every job, you use what's right for the job at hand. When the football World Cup was played in America, they wanted FIFA to change the rules so that the game could be played in segments - Had that of happened, it would have fucked up the game totally

Not so much a case of not understanding the game - I am pointing out the differences -Well, now I can see you don't REALLY understand the game. Rugby players have to attack and defend and kick goals and last the whole time -
This why I posted earlier that the two games can not be compared.Comment

Agreed, it's tough to compare the two even though they do have similarities. I was more or less making fun of the kicker's, because they are usually pussy's. I did it for one season, but I was also an offensive tackle and a linebacker. Being in on just about every play is tough, despite the fact that the game isn't in constant motion.

Having played both at somewhat relative top levels - grade rubgy league (close enough to union for the purposes of this argument - and "gridiron" (American Football) for Queensland and Australia I fully support much of the post above.American Football is the most violent team sport in the world. In case you dont know, there is a reason why players use pads and helmets in American Foootball. It cannot be played without them.
In Rugby you can only hit the guy with the ball - In football everyone gets hit.
In Rugby there are not blindside hits - In Football you can get from any side at any given time.
In Rugby there are not head-on, automobile-style collisions - In football there is practically one in every play.
In Rugby blocking is not allowed - In Football you can get killed during a block
Another point is that pads and helmets are not only used to protect, they are used to hit. Simply compare the amount and seriousness of injuries in pro football to those in rugby and there is a clear difference.
The difference is that league or union are MUCH rougher in respect to the "outside of the rules" play.
American Football play under the rules would get you 12 month suspensions in either league or union for a lot of it. It's hard. And fun ;-)
Throw a right cross in Gridiron you break your hand on a steel facemask.
Although both league and union have been much "pussified" by clamp downs on "rough" play in the past few years. A shame.

Great thread
I love rugby union, rugby league and NFL
They all have big hits - but all in different contexts
Like a number have said - it's hard to compareComment

High School football players play offensive and defensive, yes they get about 30 second breaks for plays, but besides that they play the whole game.Your game is played "by plays" I suspect for the tv - Dragging everybody off the field to bring on a defence gives half the team a long break - Don't you think if the same players stayed on all the time and stoppages were kept to a bare minimum, players then would be showing just how fit they really were? Therefor I guess rugby players are the equivalent of 15 year olds?Comment

The only argument rugby fans have against american football is that they play with pads on. That's all. And if they knew what they were talking about, they'd know it can't be played without pads. There are a reason for the pads, as I have stated in several posts by now.Comment
