Back in the day there was only ICQ. If you wanted AIM you had to have an AOL account. Eventually AOL opened it up so that you could have a free AIM name without having an AOL account but really so much of us hated AOL so much and all that it stood for and the retarded Noobs that used AOL so we pretty much stuck by ICQ. I personally use both through Trillian and happen to be one of the lucky ones with a 7 digit ICQ number. :P

I remember when a 6 digit number was the norm, a 5 digit was cool and a 4 got you laid (ok it didn't get you laid).

ICQ was the first, and because of that its users were geographically spread out (US, UK, Canada/Australia, etc). The successors to ICQ concentrated in particular geographic areas (AOL = USA, MSN = UK/Can/Aus, Yahoo = their office), so none achieved the global dominance ICQ did, and ICQ remained popular with adult webmasters who have international contacts.
