Rugby is still fairly early in its professional life. 20 years ago the fitness level etc. sucked. They are catching up though.
I'd have to say given the money US football attracts some of the faster guys on the planet. Its a nice sport to watch. But stamina levels are not that high.
If you want to see an athlete who is really fit look at David Beckham. He can literally run laps around athletes in rugby and Us football. He game winning contributions in games have been measured and often come later in games, indicating he is fitter than other players.

I'll admit that their was one good hit, and that was the first hit. However, that is still more hits than the videos the other guy said.
However, this is still harder.
Or this maybe.
Even our high school guys hit hard
Rugby:

Football:

I'll admit this though, I rather get hit by the rugby player.

Rugby players are as fit as Beckham, they have to combine power and stamina.
To show a picture of a fly half is not a fair representation of a rugby player, they are generally the smallest guys on the field. That guy still makes pretty big hits though.
I don't really follow American football, but I watch a couple of games a season and it seems like a fun game to watch but to compare the fitness with rugby players is hard as the guys rest so much.
Every rugby player on the field has certain different jobs, from scrummaging to lifting, jumping, clearing out rucks and rolling mauls. But every player on the pitch also gets involved in most aspects of the game, wingers and fly halves have to ruck, maul, tackle, run, pass, etc whilést props also need handling skills and tackling to compliment their traditional scrumming, lifting, etc.
American football players look bigger and stronger and the hits are probably harder, but a rugby player makes and takes far more in a game. I believe a back row forward at international level will run 12-18 km per game and receive the impact equivalent of 6-8 car crashes.
Conclusion? It's not a competition, enjoy both sports for what they are.
Here are some American ads for rugby I liked:

the nfl players are paid waaaay to much to slack of on not being in 110% shape. just because the nfl guys arent on the field the whole game doesnt mean they arent in shape
well it's english, but i have no idea what the fuck that saysEvery rugby player on the field has certain different jobs, from scrummaging to lifting, jumping, clearing out rucks and rolling mauls. The way i see it is football has much more head on collisions of 2-300lb men going full force into each other. In rugby they seem to follow the ball so you get alot less full speed hits. football has two sides that start a play spaced apart, taking off full speed and everyones colliding.American football players look bigger and stronger and the hits are probably harder, but a rugby player makes and takes far more in a game. I believe a back row forward at international level will run 12-18 km per game and receive the impact equivalent of 6-8 car crashes.
I'd love to see one of these rugby players get handed the ball in a nfl game, get past the defensive line and get blasted by a safety full speed without pads. If by some act of god he made it thru a game without being taken off the field in an ambulance, he wouldnt get out of bed for a month. Not that I'm taking a shot at rugby players, if the nfl players didnt wear armor either the football season would be all of one game

Well an NFL player doesn't need the stamina, he needs explosive power over 10-30 seconds where as a rugby player has to maintain it constantly over 80 minutes. This is why guys aren't as big in rugby as it is physically impossible to have that 30 people compete in terms of speed and strength for that long. Totally different physiological requirements because the sports are so different.the nfl players are paid waaaay to much to slack of on not being in 110% shape. just because the nfl guys arent on the field the whole game doesnt mean they arent in shape

I think trying to compare the sports is futile as American football has developed so much from its rugby roots and the skill sets and optimal physique for each is so different now. I would say rugby players are better all round athletes due to their need to be skilled in every aspect of the game but Football players probably have greater strength.
Aussie rules football and Gaelic football have slightly different rules and every year the two leagues pick a team to play the other in a slightly modified version of each sport. It would be great to do a similar thing with an NFL all star team and a World or National rugby team.
I believe American Football got its name from the ball being a foot long, ie a football.Paul

This is actually rather amusing.
Do any of you actually realise the size of rugby players? I'm not disputing the fact that NFL guys are big, but fuck me drunk, rugby players are freakin ENORMOUS too!TripleXPrint on Megan Fox

Both sports have their good and bad things. I play rugby and really love it.
i enjoy watching it better that American Football, but that's personal to everyone.
About the hits and brutality of both sports..... I feel they are both rough and tough. i like rugby better because you don't need to wear protection, and that tackling (most of the time) is done accordding to a series of rules.
For instance, If you lift your opponent, you are responsiblee for him having a safe landing. You fuck up you get the sin bin. How diffferent is that with American Football, where you see players get hit while whey are in the air catcching the ball.
So the armour those guys wear is necessary playing American Football, where you can tackle everybody, from all corners. Because you simply can't brace yourself for a tackle you don't see coming.
Please check out this awesome compilation of some kick ass rugby hits. You'll love it! http://youtube.com/watch?v=OoT1dfcTUaYDanny B

football and rugby are both fairly physical sports but real men where skates neither can hold a candle to hockey when it comes to toughness and hitting

In Rugby there are not blindside hits - In Football you can get from any side at any given time.
You can't get hit from any side at any given time. in football. It's called cipping or blocking in the back.Comment

When you have the ball, you can get hit from any side at any given time. That's what I meant. Also, isnt it true that in Rubgy you can only tackle below the waist? In football you can litteraly take someone's head off. (As long as its not helmet-to-helmet).Comment
-
There are probably only a handfull rugby players who could compete in the nfl, and the majority of those would have to player punter or kicker.Comment

Both games are tough, that's a fact that nobody can dispute, but when it comes down to it, Football players wear pads because they have to, not because they're pussys. Football is way tougher. And just because they don't have to run around constantly for the entire games doesn't make rugby players tougher. If you means of comparing toughness is being able to run more, those skinny ass guys from Africa who can run for days are the toughest guys in the world. You're argument = retarded.

Shit, set Brian Urlacher loose on a rugby field and it would look like the Tazmanian Devil cartoon. Just a cloud of smoke and part parts flying out. That dude is a beast.

yeah, right. just because you imagine it that way. This is what they told you on TV, so it must be true.

I don't need to be told by an announcer that Urlacher hits a ton, I've seen it with my eyes. I've seen him hit dudes before and they come out of their shoes. You don't even need to be a fan of the game to see that.
Comment
-
you saw Urlacher playing rugby against rugby forwards without pads?
if not, stop talking out of your ass, please.Comment
-
Like is said earlier i doubt there are even a handfull of rugby players who could even make an NFL squad. However, every team needs a good kicker or equipment manager.Comment
-
No I didn't see Brian Urlacher play rugby without pads, if you read what I wrote a little closer, you would see that I was implying that if it happened it would look like the Tazmanian Devil cartoon. This obviously did not happen because thats not possible for a non-cartoon person to do. Stop being a douche.

Average Rugby player is the size of an NFL punter, 90% of rugby players would DIE is they were hit head on by someone like Joey Porter.
Just simple physics.
