the water in our well ran dry tonight - how long does it usually take for mother nature to refill? having a party tomorrow and would like to have water for it - we moved into this house and have no fucking clue about well water

I'm on well water, and mine was dry a few weeks ago... I just called and paid 200 for a fire truck to come and fill it.. all good now

If a drought is the cause of the dry well wait will fill it up somewhat if several wells are sucking from the same source that's a problem. To drill deeper could be the solution until all the neighbor say Go Fuck Yourself we'll drill even deeper. A well may fill some if let set but don't figure on filling a swimming pool or anything like that. As for the Party who the Hell is going to be drinking water.Comment

Just what I was thinking. I was visiting my son a couple weeks ago, and he had his firetruck with him. I told him he should spray down my car, and he said that would not be a very good idea.
He let some of the water out of the tank, and I was very glad he had not done as I requested.
OTOH, the house I just bought has a well. Luckily, it rains there a lot, so I am guessing (hoping) that running dry won't be an issue.Comment

yes, check the easy stuff first.
1. check the circuit breaker and make sure the well pump is getting power
2. if getting power check the pressure tank in the basement or crawl space and note the pressure on the gauge, see if the gauge is cycling. most well pumps go off and on, filling the pressure tank which gives you water pressure at the tap.
3. the pressure tank should have a valve on it---open it, if the well pump is cycling you will either hear the hiss of compressed air (meaning probable dry well) or get a flow of water---if you get water at the pressure tank you have a pipe blockage in the house.
4. all areas have a rising and lowering water table. it is rare that a well goes dry by itself because the average seasonal water table is about the same on a yearly basis. there could be temporary extenuating circumstances that might lower the seasonal water table such as:
farmers within one mile with deep well sucking water for field irrigation during a drought, new construction locally with someone filling a swimming pool, etc.
so the situation can correct itself.
new well with new pump and new pressure system might cost $2000-4000 usd depending on depth.
