The whole police - court - prison system is disgusting. The primary reason is no longer to catch -bring to justice - lock up violators of the law, but to serve as a huge money machine.

Simple case in point for OC, Calif.:

County jails get X fixed dollars per day for housing inmates, and get X dollars for transporting them between the jails or to the courthouses.

Its common practice to take new arrivals, who are getting processed, and run them through 2-3 jails on their very first day. This way 2-3 jails each get a full days $, even if the inmate was staged there for a few hours only.

Often when the courts decide to release you (bail or not), the jail makes sure that they dont let the inmates out till a few minutes after midnight. This way they now collect another full days $.

Then there is the issue with overtime with the Sheriffs Dept. OC Register ran a report which listed the pay of every Deputy in the County. If memory serves me correctly, there were a lot of Sheriffs that earned $125 - 150 - 175k a year. When I write this, I am not referring to the County Sheriff who runs the show, or some Watch Commander.

So much overtime is consistantly paid, they could hire new Deputies if they wanted to. The investigation showed the union out here runs much like the Mafia did in the day.
