It's sad but true. There really is such a thing as fake traffic. I don't know about today but in the last 90's it was really really really bad. People would load a popup that was say like 100x100 in size or in a hidden frame, forcing the click through page to load (back when people were paying per click) and it would appear that the person was loading the page when in reality they never seen it.
As for fake page rank ... that I know happens a lot which is stupid because anyone who is going to invest money in a domain based on page rank is going to be smart enough to check if it's real or fake.
