The great wall is actually a collection of fortifications that were built over several dynasties. Their use was limited according to whether or not locals were getting along with the mongols or not, which changed from time to time and location to location.

                                                                          Actually while is started out as a patchwork of smaller fortifications it was unified\completed during the Qin Dynasty and then expanded significantly in the Ming.
