Obviously he was trying to make some kind of point but there really is zero reason not to take the money. His lack of knowledge about the usefulness of money is pretty funny considering what a math genius he is. Then again when you are that good at math I'm sure he doesn't have any problems making money when he needs it. Still can't see why you wouldn't take the money and donate it to a charity at least.

I remember when this happened, he's one of those ultra smart ethnic Jews, I admire him a lot for turning down the money. The world must look very different to to him than it does to most of us

It's no big deal. He's probably getting $20/hour to tutor people at Uni, could get a good salary as a maths lecturer.

The statement he is making will resonate for millions of years to come, securing his place in history as one of the greats!

He solved a problem that was unsolvable before. This is very impressive. Congratulations, Math genius Grigori Perelman.

He already has a ton of money from doing all those GEICO caveman commercials.

On July 1, 2010, he turned down the prize saying that he believes his contribution in proving the Poincaré conjecture was no greater than that of U.S. mathematician Richard Hamilton (who first suggested a program for the solution).

As of the spring of 2003, Perelman, no longer worked at the Steklov Institute.[10] His friends are said to have stated that he currently finds mathematics a painful topic to discuss; some even say that he has abandoned mathematics entirely.[32] According to a 2006 interview, Perelman was then unemployed, living with his mother in Saint Petersburg.[10]

Calculating the velocity necessary for Yshua ben Nazareth to stay on the surface of a body of water is a lot less crazy than using it as a basis for a belief system. To him, our currency is monkey money, and the fact that it makes us dance around and do even more stupid things probably doesn't impress him.
