    Record opium crop in southern Afghanistan

    Heck of a job

    Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, where some 7,000 British troops are based, is on the verge of becoming the world's biggest drugs supplier, cultivating more opium than entire countries such as Burma, Morocco, or even Colombia, the UN warned yesterday.

    The report will not be welcome reading for the British government. Five years ago, Tony Blair said Britain would take responsibility for overseeing Afghanistan's anti-narcotics programme.

                                              Opium funds local tribes, but also terrorists. It's very hard to snuff out a cash crop like that. Look how hard it has been to eradicate coca cultivation in South America.

                                                                          That's the irony - at the same time people in the US get jailed for drugs, the CIA and other contractors are trading drugs - in Cambodia, Vietnam, South America and probably elsewhere with their drug-dealing track record.
