A 7-year-old boy fatally shot an 8-year-old cousin while they were playing with an illegal, unregistered gun at home, authorities said.
Police were still searching for the child and his mother following the Sunday night shooting of LaQuarrie Jefferson, officials said.
"This is a case with two victims -- you have a victim who was shot and you have a 7-year-old who has to live with the fact that this happened for the rest of his life," police commissioner Davis said. "So it is hard to call anybody a suspect in this case, except for that person who brought that gun into the house."
... It's fair to assume that at some point the gun was legal and registered to an upstanding citizen, but somehow found it's way through the system and yet another tragic story.
