its quite simple why soccer is more widespread u dont need anything except a ball to play... open field 4 shirts , 2 on each side and theres your goals. Even afgans can play.... note to self * watch out for mine fields *

You are sooooo wrong. Combine the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup Final, and the NBA Playoff's and you still don't get 1/3 of the amount of people that watch World cup. Just in Brazil alone in 1998 250 Million people watched the match. That is only ONE country.

Sorry to tell you, even though I am a fan of all of those sports.

Well, that would be a pretty fine trick, seeing as how the population of Brazil in 1996, according to the CIA was 174,468,575 - all I can say is they must have one helluva tourist industry. Do you want facts on how many people even own TV's in Brazil?

I do not think there is any argument that soccer is the most popular sport in the world, however, the Super Bowl is broadcast all over the world, and every American television set is set to Fox during the game, so yeah, all the tourists are watching it too, except for the 37 at Disneyland.

As was stated above, the reason why soccer is so popular is that you need nothing more than something to kick that will not run away afterwards.

Soccer is so popular because any moron can understand the rules in about 2 minutes. Try that with American football.

To each their own over which is best. That's a fairly pointless and unresolvable argument. However he was making the point that the viewing figures for the world cup are FAR higher than the superbowl. Very few outside the US are interested in the superbowl mainly for the obvious reason that they don't live in the US. However a huge % of the world watches the world cup.

Maybe not the SMALL percentage of natives although it wouldn't surprise me if they'd make their way to the nearest pub in civilization to catch the game. All those in the slums will DEFINITELY be doing just that. You seem to forget that you don't need a TV in your home to watch television.

Also, in my 19 years of living in America I probably only watched 6 Superbowls. Most years there were more interesting things on or failing that I hit Blockbuster for a good flick.

I'm not saying football is better than american football or vice versa but simply agreeing that the viewing figures for the World Cup Final will be much higher than figures for the Superbowl.

Do you live in a mental state of 1930? There may be 50-100k of 'native' peoples living in the rainforests of Brazil today. Possibly a few k more, but more than likely less. And a good percentage of those peoples do not live the stereotypical native lifestyle. Yes they live in the jungle, hunt for their food, do the things their ancestors did but they have knowledge of the outside world. I suppose you are right that some of them are cannibalistic but that wouldn't make a difference. THOSE tribes keep to themselves for just that reason. Part of the percentage I mentioned that probably wouldn't bother to emerge just to watch a football game. Also I didn't say they'd all head for Rio. That is just you showing your ignorance of the geography and technology level of Brazil. Most of these people wouldn't have to travel more than a day out of the jungle to find a TV.

I'm finished with this argument now. Like I said before, it isn't the sport that interests me, just the misconceptions some americans have about the rest of the world.
