Thats really totally bullshit. There are a lot of seriously, genuinely wealthy GFY people. Besides, I count London as anything on the London underground these days and its very viable and totally workable to live there - now more than ever before.

My girlfriend is quite close to central and doesnt pay for her own rented room. She rents a whole house and sublets the rooms which provides her with 1 room for herself plus a few extra quid at the end of it.
