I could be wrong... I'm dang sure not a music guru.
But in music, it appears to me if you focus on one artist, then 'you're the artist' you sound like them, look like them, dance like them, like Elvis people basically.
Otherwise sticking with the same thing, I thought was more like 'your own style' or a flavor of music, something like that vs. a person.
Personally, I think those that find their own music/style, connect with more people.. Extreme examples being, Elvis or Stevie Wonder.
